Is it realistic?

Could a guy be killed by accident, obviously an accident, and everyone say it was not accidental?
Could a sixtysomething guy really be the tough guy the crime boss in this movie is?
And there is no way cops would ever, ever take somebody into custody and turn him over to the mob for reward money. Their job is to take him downtown and book him.

Q: Could a guy be killed by accident, obviously an accident, and everyone say it was not accidental?

A: You have to remember... This was the death of a VERY powerful man. Everyone knew, accident or not, his death meant the family would want blood. The reports to police telling them that "he tripped him" were probably from the mafia family that wanted police co-operation. The cops were corrupt anyway, but if they told them that this kid murdered him, that would make it even easier to take him down.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A: Organized crime families are run by fear. This guy probably took over the family years earlier, and made examples of how he would run the family from the beginning. He was oldest, but also wisest. (is that a word?)
Yes, he was older, but he also had his son, up until then, to help back him up.

A: Why not? Do you not believe crooked cops exist? If so, you would hate the movie Training Day!
1. The Cops are already underpaid.
2. The Cops figure, somebody is gonna get the money, might as well be me.
3. This whole town was run by the mafia.

But has there ever been a real-life example of the third thing happening?

reply

If so no one would know about it unless they were caught!

Psychos do not explode when sunlight hits them, I don't give a *beep* how crazy they are!

A. That was the only down side for me about the film it should been outside on the road side, Danny Halloran should have fallen over and hit his head on a curb or something.

Q.Could a sixty something guy really be the tough guy the crime boss in this movie is?

A. Yes Gangster familys live in fear like ShangriLaDeeDa mention. Everything he/she said is true so i'll repeat it: This guy probably took over the family years earlier, and made examples of how he would run the family from the beginning. He was oldest, but also wisest. (is that a word?)
Yes, he was older, but he also had his son, up until then, to help back him up.

A.
1. okay back when this film was set the police were extremely corrupt.
2. Also the police were scared of the big organised crime families. because they were more powerful than the police.
3. Expanding... the mafia gangs run the town and not just one town they used to have Vendetta's with other gangs to take other town.

Hope this helps,

In real life John Gotti's son was killed when a neighbor accidentally hit him with a car. That neighbor was wacked - whether or not on Gotti's orders his daughter disputes. But not much happens without the boss don't know about it.

In real life Carlo Gambino ran the Gambino crime family until his death at 74. He handed the reigns over to Paul Castelano, who reigned from the age of 61 until Gotti had him wacked at age 74.

In real life google Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa, two NYPD cops who were on mop payroll for years until they were convicted.

In real life there are only two kinds of cops; those who are crooked and those who look the other way while their partner is being crooked.
