Just saw the film for the first time since it was new, and was blown away by Maggie Cheung's performance. Does anyone know if the "Cinéma vérité" scenes were scripted or ad-libbed? She seems so natural and fresh when she's talking about the character she's playing in the film.

I assumed it was essentially an interview - just her talking as herself.

But yes, her performance of Ruan was beautiful. She's a wonderful actress.

That is a masterpiece of understatement.
