Nice movie, loved it as a child, but: GIGANTIC, GIANT PLOTHOLE

I can`t understand why nobody asked the big question: what is the sense of this movie?
Most of the animated movies featuring animals fall in one of two categories:
1. Animals are anthromorphic, clothed (normally) and totally behave like humen and represent humen; no humen exist because animals are representing humen. Exapmple would be Disney`s "Robin Hood".
2. The animals are actual animals, but speak and behave more humanized than actual animals do. They live in jungles, farms or sea; they live on the streets or are some human`s pets. They are really supposed to be animals, although they are heavily romanticized and behave more child friendly. Example would be Disney`s Lion King, Lady And The Tramp, and most animated series featuring animals.
"Rock a doodle" is a really charming flick, don`t get me wrong, but even as a child, I saw how it didn`t made any sense at all. I mean, at the beginning, they are FARM ANIMALS! They might behave humanized, they even wear clothes, but they live on a farm, chicken`s lay eggs. The rooster cries in the morning. We can clearly see they are NOT supposed to be farmers or something represented by animals for whatever reason- they`re supposed to be farm animals! We know there are farmers, milking the cows, feeding the animals etc.
And then, they go to the city, no humen are present and all animals are totally anthromorphic, representing humen, rock stars, managers and stuff.
I`m speechless nobody, virtually NOBODY asked this, because it leaves the whole movie without sense.
Or maybe it`s so obvious only I fail to see the reason?

I`m not talking to myself- myself just won`t stop talking to I!

reply

Don't worry about it too much. A lot of this movie was a giant plothole, but that's what makes it entertaining.

reply

It's just a movie, why do people need to be so literal?

reply

Normally I`m actually not. ^^
But after asking myself this for years, I just wanted to have it asked once

I`m not talking to myself- myself just won`t stop talking to I!

reply

True.

I`m not talking to myself- myself just won`t stop talking to I!

reply

I thought the same thing when I was a kid.
First everything is normal, and suddenly, the animals can talk and the kid turns into a cat, wtf is up with this?

reply

The answer is that these were two alternate realities. When Edmond turned into a cat he basically went into a different dimension.

reply

Well, making animals talk is used in many animal-centered movies, like Lion King, Lady And The Tramp, Oliver And Company... but they are nonethless supposed to be actual animals. While in Rock A Doodle, the distinction is not very clear...

I`m not talking to myself- myself just won`t stop talking to I!

reply

And Mickey Mouse has a pet dog.

No one cares.

Your mom goes to college!

reply

But since he lives in a house, has pets (most prominently the dog), goes to work, etc., he clearly's supposed to be anthromophic.
Woulda been different had he lived in a mouse's hole though.

I`m not talking to myself- myself just won`t stop talking to I!

reply

Please!!! its anthropomorphic. These mythical beasts however? these Humens? I cant comprehend. Is they kinda like humans? I never heard of such lore. Please do explain yourself. I would be very interested in learnin more bout humens and humenkind....

reply

guys........ Edmund woke up at the end... he was dreaming... Case Dismissed.... lolz

And as for him dancing with the cartoons at the end - kids have imagination. That and it's a kids movie. Try making sense out of the Pagemaster - it's technically the same exact thing.

"Stupid Banana-Raincoat-Wearin' B****."

reply

haha thanks for shutting these pricks up ashfoxx! This tard can't even spell human! humen? wtf! hahahahahahahhaahha who's taking this cat seriously?

reply

"Human" is singular (one), I'm using the plural (more than one).
In fact, though, I even know the plural's supposed to be "humans", I just forget it whenever I write without really thinking. You know, man= men, human= humans, I always have to remember it's not build the same way as "man" is.
Also, I'm no "tard", I'm from Germany and only speak English for five years, normally people are rather impressed and won't believe me I'm no American.

Es tut mir Leit. Ich weiss nicht.

reply

I think it's somewhat confusing, because at the end, doesn't the narration by Patou say something like Edmond's Mom didn't know what had really stopped the rain, possibly implying that it could have really happened.

"Ridiculous, Lucky Captain Rabbit King. Lucky Captain Rabbit King nuggets are for the youth!"

reply

You've already gotten two explanations(dream and other dimension), yet you refuse to believe that aswell.. Are you really exploring the question you first asked, or are you just trying to dis the movie?

reply

It only really gets confusing when you consider the fact that Goofy is also a dog...

reply

eh. what about Warner Bros. cartoons? Or Roger Rabbit? Or Alice in Wonderland even actually. Follow the rabbit down the hole, suddenly he's got nice little jacket on...

reply

in all honesty i don't think it's supposed to matter. The movie is geared towards little kids who probably wouldn't think so hard about stuff like that. If you did, well ur just smart. But i don't think when they were making this movie they were worrying about whether alternate realities or dimensions or wutever made sense. It's a kids movie. I never thought about it when I was little and watched it. If it helps, think of James and the giant peach. maybe it was something like that, they do seem like pretty similar situations.

COOL STORY, BRO

Hey, it's back! Check the profile for the message boards I control.

reply

Uh, there's a much bigger plothole that I'm surprised you didn't bring up: if Chanticleer's crowing did indeed cause the sun to rise after all, why did it come up without him at the beginning?

Anyone who thinks the Bible is compatible with modern morality needs to read Gen 19:1-9 and 30-36.

reply

CalvinValjean, if you take notice, the sun began to come up without his crowing, but immediately went down. In the end the sun approaches, but it is, in fact(at least pertaining to this movie) Chanticleer's crowing that raises it.

reply

The GIGANTIC PLOT HOLE IS WHY DID THE SUN RISE THAT ONE TIME WITHOUT THE ROOSTER CROWING

reply

God got bored, decided to screw with Chanticleer, and put the sun on a string and played with it like a yoyo. Case closed. :)

reply

...and jumping into an animated world is realistic.

I love how people can take on element seriously, yet take in an entire fitcional story as a whole.

*Do not cry because it's over; Smile because it happened.*

reply

A movie needs to establish an internal logic, alongside presenting situations that don't go beyond the suspension of disbelief. So complaining about the sun still rising when Chanticleer doesn't crow when it's firmly established that he DOES need to crow for the sun to rise is a valid complaint.

reply

You know I never really thought about this either now or as a kid but your right it is rather weird.

reply

Srsly? That's not a plot hole -- that's a poor decision on the part of the animators. They could've been drawn without clothes and it wouldn't have affected the actions of the movie.

A few of the real plot holes:
1) the beginning of the movie proves that Chanticleer's crow doesn't wake up the sun, so why does he have to crow at the end of the movie to wake up the sun?

2) If the Duke can do so much magic, then why can't he just breath on Chanticleer and make him lose his voice? Or turn him into a slug? Or just fill the world with darkness since Chanticleer doesn't really control the sun and the Duke has that nifty cloud-creating pipe organ?

3) If birds are banned from watching The King's show after the Duke gives Pinky that warning, why are so many guests dressing up like penguins? do they not realize that penguins are also birds?
