My dad wrote this!

Hey everybody! im proud to say that my dad is sam resnick and wrote this wonderful film! unfortunately due to costners TOTAL PIECE OF CRAP this did not get even close to as much credit as it deserves. whose with me on that one? the dramatics that went in to the making of this are pretty ridiculous. basically the bottom line is that it should have been with out a doubt released in theaters and at least on DVD. BEST VERSION EVER MADE! EVERYONE GO SEE IT! :D

Hmm...how curious that you think Prince of Thieves is a piece of crap, as it totally overshadowed your dad's work.

All thing aside though, I thought this was a pretty decent version, solid stuff.

reply

Well there are a number of considerations as to why Costner's piece of crap over shadowed this superior film, but basically Costner's film had a larger budget, wider distribution, and a better ad campaign.

I have seen both version and personally, I would rather have root canals done on all my teeth at the same time without pain killers before watching Costner's version again.

reply

I've just watched this version on a local station, and I guess it's an indication of how much better the Costner version was marketed that even the on-screen TV guide indicated it as Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, with Costner and Freeman in the cast, etc. Whoever had to type the blurb probably couldn't believe that someone could've made another version of the same story in the same year!

I thought it was a lot more realistic than PoT, but the end was just a little too cheesy, what with Daguerre also making an about-turn.

reply

Money overshadowed this superior version, not quality. I like Costner, but the version of RH in which he starred is clearly garbage.

reply

Costner's film is good, but not great, mindless bit of nonsense. The only reason it overshadowed the other Robin Hood is because 20th Century Fox got scared and decided to move the U.S. release to TV with practiclly no fanfare.

"A friend of mine is studying History at Notts Trent University, and her professor was the historical advisor on RH:POT. Apparently they ignored everything he said, and it shows. This movie manages to be both more historically accurate AND more interesting."

I did history at college last year and my teacher completely ripped Prince of Thieves and explained how bad it was (he also did this with Braveheart but thats for another board). One of the funniest was when he drew a map and showed how Kevin Coster and Morgan Freeman managed to walk from the bottom of England up to Hadrians Wall (on the border of Scotland) where a fight takes place then turn and walk back down to Nottingham all before the sun goes down. Lol it was brilliant.

That is what annoyed me the most about that version (that and the claim that Celts eat their dead Ancestors!), I live in Northumberland. Is it easy to walk from Northumberland all the way to Nottingham in a few hours? No.

I agree it was hilariously made!

Just assume that the recognizable real-world locations are standing in for someplace else.

I remember seeing this on TV when I was 12 and I could tell that it was more than a "made-for-TV" movie quality pic. I was actually kind of confused, I was wondering why there was such a high quality Robin Hood movie on TV the same summer a big-budget blockbuster was coming out.

Needless to say, when I saw the the Costner film, I was extremely disappointed, I kept remembering this one. I was lucky enough to recently pick up a DVD of this, have you not seen this? I got it at Studio Store on the Fox Lot a few months ago.

reply

This a competent telling of Robin Hood, and I liked it well enough. I agree that the RH: PoT, wasn't that good. The best RH movie stars Erol Flynn: "The Adventures of Robin Hood," it's a classic. Another of my favourites is" "Robin and Marion," starring Sean Connery, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Shaw, and Nicol Williamson. It's a great film about the aged characters, occuring years down the line. See it!

Thanks for the tip!

I think Prince of Thieves was great. They're showing this movie today, so I think I might watch it. Just went here to see what rating it got to see if it might be worth watching.

reply

Meh, was okay. Looked fairly expensive for a TV movie, and was entertaining enough. Not something I would pay for to watch in a theater though.

reply

After the classic Erroll Flynn version of "Robin Hood", this is by far the best of the lot. The film is unusual for being more "realistic" and "gritty" than almost any other version, with fine performances and non-stop action. Costner's version is NOT a "piece of crap" however, but it is also not the best telling of this story and tends to be rather pedestrian when compared with this fine motion picture. Uma Thurman may not be the prettiest of the leading ladies who played the maiden, but she sure is striking and dynamic in her performance. Besides the sound screenplay, the cinematography must be noted as brilliant, some scenes looking like museum paintings. Costumes are also authentic and genuine in appearance. This film is on DVD now.

I would not have been proud if my dad made this peice of trash. Horrible story and actors, and why did Robin Hood have a porno-moustache????

reply

I think the Porno muzzy is rather fetching.
And I would keep my opinions to myself if I couldn't spell 'PIECE'.

reply

Just because some can't spell piece doesn't mean that they don't have the right to voice their opinion. Typing errors happen. But maybe not for you since obviously you've never spelled anything wrong in your entire life.

I haven't seen this version but i'm planning on it someday. I liked Robin Hood: Prince of Theives when I was little. But I haven't seen it since. I absolutely love the the love song "Everything I Do"!

reply

That's normal sweetangel.....pretty typical!!!

this movie is showing on FMC channel right now. it's my first time viewing it and I think i'ts better than the costner one.

A friend of mine had forever gone on about RH:POT. Blah-blah-blah-blah-blah. He owns a copy of it and yet had never seen the Errol Flynn's 1938 version nor this version. As a point I rented the Errol Flynn version. As he watched he was full of woops & howls. A bit corny but "the best of the two". In reality -- he loved the '38 version. Then I pulled from my personal collection this version, written by lexie3535's father, my favorite make. My good friend laughed, teared up amd ended by saying "the best of the bunch".

I love Errol Flynn as Robin Hood, Kostner is a poser. Bergin, Thurman, Prochnow, Krabbé, a great cast and a fine script indeed make this the finest Robin Hood movie thus far. I'm so happy impulse made me buy this movie even though it's on VHS.

I too have the DVD of "Robin Hood" one of the first I bought and I had to
buy a second DVD drive and change its Region Code setting so I could play it.

Costner allegedly chopped some of Alan Rickman's scenes out because he stole
all of them from him. Apparently Alan stole the whole film and Kevin
said "it's my bow, I'm in charge of the shooting you're not playing!" and ran
home greetin (crying) to his mum.

Any other Brits catch the criminally rare "The Story of Robin Hood and his
Merrie Men" on Channel 4 last year? I did. I'll stick my neck out and say that
(in my opinion) in some respects it is the *EQUAL* OF THE ERROL FLYNN CLASSIC.

At our house, we have a collection of movie lines that are oft repeated throughout the years.

A favorite of my wife and kids, which is used to express displeasure: "I'll cut your heart out with spoon." The intended victim must then inquire: "Why a spoon?" To which the accuser replies, in their best drawling Alan Rickman: "Because it hurts more!" (It helps if a spoon is held aloft during the exchange, although the prop is not strictly necessary).

There are other memorable quotes from RHPOT, but my favorite is from the film starring Patrick Bergen, from the climactic fight scene, where the Baron Falconet shouts in a heavy accent "Hooowwwd!" which is replied by Robin Hood basically yelling "FAWCKIN-AY!!!!" as he rushes to battle.

This is my favorite version.

Yes, your dad's version is better.

The original Robin Hood of legend was just a thief, according to the definitive text on the subject, by J.C. Holt.

This is my favorite Robin Hood telling. I have many of them both written and visual. I have been to the Sherwood Forrest Theme Park in England. I am looking for the longer versions of the film. The 104 minute cut seems to lack something for me. I have seen references to 116 min, 133 min(Germany), and a 140 or 150 min cuts made for cable. If anyone has any sources to search, I would appreciate any suggestions. I also have several multiple Robin Hood versions to trade with other enthusiasts. I have done extensive searching. Congrats to your father. plowphoto

The Best version of Robin Hood is Robin of Sherwood ( a british tv series from the 80's) Starring Michael Praed as Robin and later Jason Connery it encompassed almost all of the legends.
Moviewise Bergen's is way better than Costner's ( why would a Brit have an Indiana accent)

Love this film. It's my favorite after The Adventures of Robin Hood.
Real shame it's virtually forgotten and has such a bare bones DVD.

I heard this film was made for the silver screen, and did actually get to play in theaters over seas. But for whatever reason, Fox decided to dump it on televison in the U.S. a month before Prince of Thieves debuted.

Really wish this film got the treatment it deserved. I think it could have stood it's own against PoT, if not out perform it. Oh well.
