Can anyone please explain the tribal thing that's been going on through both movies? Ok we find out they come out every 3 months during a full moon. Why?

They had a burial ground on one side of the island, evidently a graveyard for special people of the tribe. So the mother took the toddlers and moved to the other side of the isle. When Richard was old enough he wanted to explore the creepy "forbidden" area.
