How did he get a hold of the (SPOILER)

How did he get a hold of the file to give to the man's wife, if he was no longer being given access to his case file? Did he save it before - and if so, why?

I always found it funny because by giving it to the wife, wasn't he violating client confidentiality? He opened his own firm, including himself, up to a HUGE lawsuit from their own client.
