nick-name 'Waski'

The youngest child in the movie was nick-named "Waski". The spelling is different, but this was my grandfather's last name, a name which started out in Georgia around 1736. Does anyone know why how or why this name was chosen by the author?

Interesting. I know this post is old, but my last name is pronounced as 'waski' also, but it's spelled Waschke. It's mostly German, but I believe it is actually a Prussian name.
