Rose = male libido

There is discussion here about "the scene", and was "Rose a sex offender", and "is buddy a sociopath". While those are valid discussions, I think they may miss the point of the movie. I think in a way it's an allegory for male sexual development. She "arrives at the house" when Buddy is 13. When he gets out his flashlight and porn at night she "comes in to his bed" and he has a sexual experience. He says "I'm curious" and "it's natural". And I think her reluctance and then guilt actually represent other feelings a boy would have about it. In the morning his mother treats him like "he must be sick", which I think might represent society saying it's wrong. At the end his father is an old man and tells him "Rose is dead". I could go on about what other things in the movie might mean, but probably everyone can come up with their own ideas (or not, if you don't agree with this idea - I could be wrong).

On a side note, I remember seeing "the scene" while flipping around channels a long time ago, and a while ago something reminded me of it but I couldn't remember what the movie was or who any of the actors were. Then just yesterday I happened on it again while it was playing of IFC. I think it's a very good movie, but of course it's one of those where the interesting part is considering what's going on with the characters, and not everyone likes that. Not to judge anyone, but I think being uptight about the sexual situations makes it harder to appreciate.
