Barbra is an absolutely atrocious actress, unless she's playing an obnoxious, overbearing, nasally stereotypical Jewish mother. Basically, that means "Meet the Fockers" should have been her first and last film. She absolutely ruined the character of Lowenstein, who's supposed to be beautiful, sexy, and intelligent. Just because her character is Jewish doesn't mean she should sound like she came out of a bad high school production of "Fiddler on the Roof."

What are you talking about? I think that Austin is badly in need of a doctor himself. Barbra was beautiful, sexy and intelligent so we can only assume that Austin has some major issues that perhaps some therapy might help. Sounds like her Dr. Lowenstein came out of a bad high school "Fiddler"- I think that Austin needs his hearing checked as well. That is not even remotely to be found in the seven time Oscar nominated film. Seriously Austin, there is something very wrong with you.

There's nothing wrong with Austin, he's merely stating his opinion. There's nothing wrong with me, either; I'm just not a big fan like the rest of y'all.

Barbra Streisand has a very particular talent. I think I've seen every film she's ever done, and I've heard many, many of her recordings. As an director, she very definitely controls her own on-screen image.

I have a problem with this movie because it adds to the clichéd "Paddle faster, I hear banjos" image of the South so often portrayed in films. However, I did see that many posters on this board relate to its theme of abuse and recovery rather than to seeing it as just another film about dysfunctional Southerners.

You do realize that it is a film based on a novel right? And its not a story about dysfunctional southerners as much as its a film about a family and hiding family secrets. Them being southerners just explains the dynamics and thinking of their mother....

Please reread my post.

I read your post, I was just wondering if you realized that this was a movie based on a novel, I assume that either a) the public cared dearly about or B) Barbara Streisaid really wanted to develope a film about it, I cant say from first hand knowledge as i was 5 when it was made. I was just clearly stating that your proclamation of this just being another movie with dysfunct southerners is a bit harse in that it really was no surprise from the announcement we're making "the Price of Tides" it was quite clear that the story would be about southerners....

Why dont you try reading the book....

Streisand is one of the "best" at promoting her self-serving image. It astounds me when I think about the notion she had, in thinking she was ideal to bring Pat Conroy's sprawling, intimate epic to the screen. If she wanted to play Lowenstein, fine. Barbra should have let someone else have control and direct the picture and make the character supporting—just like in the novel.
