I can't see how anyone can find this anything other than distasteful and shocking!

A film so excrementally bad it's a wonder Peter Richardson didn't run and hide after making it.

I have an extraordinarily right-wing Roman Catholic friend who lists this as one of his favourite films. Not having seen it myself, can someone tell me if I should be surprised? My guess is that he is one of few to fully recognize/understand/appreciate all the hidden references to minute matters of doctrine and practice and whatnot, and finds these hysterical simply because he knows about such things to the same degree. Perhaps he can stand a little fun being poked, even sees the funny side. Is this film so offensive that most Roman Catholics lose their sense of humour over it? I'm just wondering why it bothers others so much when my incredibly conservative RC friend loves it so.
shareprobably the title is enough to send them over the moon....
me i kinda liked it here and there...its kind of like a king ralph type comedy where a common guy (ok your common priest) through some insane reason or mistake gets named the next pope and of course he's completely unprepared to be the next pope...although he does make a game attempt...honestly having seen it i can't really see anything completely irreligious about it...its not like their making fun of the religion...its you know like if SNL did a sketch where some guy became the pope accidently!
robbie coltrane is funny though...if you;ve seen Nuns On The Run..its kind of similar in terms of its tone, and actually its subject matter too since well they(him and eric idle) were pretending to be catholic nuns in that movie.
I saw this as a devout Episcopalian, but now that I am Catholic, I still love this film. It satirizes the hierarchy without mercy but the faith of Father (soon to be Pope) Abrizzizi (I think that was his name)is deep, true and touching. I have a devout friend who always says, "There's a lot of politics in Church," and I think that is what this movie rags on.
