Movies Spoofed in POPCORN

What real movies do the movies-within-the-movie spoof? MOSQUITO is obviously a parody of THEM! and its giant ants, TARANTULA, THE DEADLY MANTIS and THE BEGINNING OF THE END and its grasshoppers.

Attack of the Amazing Electrifying Man or whatever it was called was a spoof on The Tingler. I'm pretty sure the seat shock gimmick was also used for that movie too.

I'm just having trouble placing what movie The Stench was a take-off on. But yeah, this movie was like Grindhouse about a decade and a half before that movie existed.

I would agree that the seat shock gimmick was meant to reference The Tingler, but I believe the actual movie was a pretty direct persiflage of "Man-Made Monster" (also released as "Electric Man") with Lionel Atwill and Lon Chaney jr. It was about a man being turned into an "electric zombie" with a deadly electricity touch very similar to the character played by Bruce Glover in "Popcorn". The mad scientist in "Popcorn" even looks an awful lot like Atwill does in "Man-Made Monster".

The Stench is a riff on Smell-O-Vision which never really took off because it cost too much to outfit theaters to use it. There weren't any horror movies done in Smell-O-Vision, so The Stench also serves as a parody of mid-twentieth century Japanese horror like Godzilla and Mothra. Only in this case instead of a giant nuclear monster, you have a giant nuclear cloud of foul-smelling gas.
