I give them credit for not casting some bimbo, but an emo looking chick who is older and less pretty than Keanu?
The first time I watched Point Break, I was bewildered by her casting. Perhaps I had my shallow reasons like others, however I genuinely felt like she was all wrong for the part.
Now, I appreciate her presence in the movie more and more. I like what she brings to the role.

shareI personally find Lori Petty attractive, but I was in a chat room on AOL once when Tank Girl was coming out. She came in to take questions and plug the movie. Everybody refused to believe it was really her (in fact I'm still skeptical), and wouldn't stop making fun of the movie. They trolled her right off AOL.

Lori Petty was a great choice. First of all it is not surprising a girl surfer is somewhat a "Tom Boy", she has to be to be strong enough. (I like the way Gidget became more Tom boyish when she surfed.)"
As for her not being the "total babe", a couple of times in my life I fell for some girls who would not have been the type I would fall for. But, sometimes your heart makes it's own decision and doesn't care about the aesthetics. If you ever fall for someone you are thinking does not fit your physical perspective of the "right one", they are probably "the right one." :)

Cant have a real , unconventionally attractive, girl who looks like a surfer - in a surfing role.

Some the slate has merit but still I thought she was beautiful and rightly casted. I can see her being a surfer and a hot one.
Actually Mark, she does not really look like a surfer, other than being athletically built. She has very dark hair without a single highlight. I surf almost every day, and even people with Dark hair get some highlights if they surf all the time. She also was not very tan, if she was in the water that she would have much more color in the face. She did not look like the surfer girls I see in the lineup. Physically, she had an athletic build which would have been consistent with a surfer, but she needed more color in her hair and her face for it to be realistic. I don't know anyone who actually surfs who thinks she was right for the role.
I actually think she has a pretty face, for the record.
So no Mark, she does not look like a surfer. She looks like someone who gets lots of exercise, a good thing, but spends her time in doors.
If you watch the movie you will notice that Keanu looks more tan in the face as the film goes on. I don't know why they missed this with Lori Petty, a bit of makeup could have solved that inaccuracy.
I thought Lori Petty was fine and very believable as a cute tomboy surfer girl who hangs out with a bunch of surfer guys. A super model type wouldn't have fit the role. Granted she hasn't aged very well since.

For the record several female professional surfers have posed in the SI swimsuit issue. Alana Blanchard in particular is absolutely gorgeous.
The actress does not have to be a surfer girl, but she needs to actually look like someone who is in the water all the time. Lori Petty has very dark hair without the highlights someone gets when they spend lots of time in the ocean. I tend to surf before work almost every day. On the weekends I surf during the summer and usually ski during the winter. My hair is always highlighted, but it is more highlighted during the summer as I spend more time in the water. Even people with dark hair get highlights if they spend lots of time surfing.
Look at what female pro surfers look like. Go to the wsl website and look up who they are, then do some research. They tend to have more color in the face and highlights in the hair than Lori Petty. Like I said before, Lori Petty looks athletic, she just does not look like someone who surfs. Like I also said before they handle this better with Keanu, as the movie goes on he has some facial tan and some highlights in his hair, THAT is how people who surf but have dark hair tend to look.
Really? Wow, I thought she looked beautiful and easily someone he could fall for. Typical, punk surfer girl :)
