Song at the end

Does anyone out there know what song the choir sings at the end of the movie?

reply

I don't know the answer but if you find out please let me know. I have been trying to find this out for years and keep giving up. Thanks

It is Serenade (Ständchen) in D minor by Franz Schubert. The original piece is in German.

Also the beautiful song that Taylor Bradshaw (Justin Whalin) opens the movie with is Laudate Dominum by Mozart.

Thanks so much! I've been looking for the song as well.

And most of the rest of the music is from Handel's Messiah, including the movements "Hallelujah" (aka Hallelujah Chorus) and "All We Like Sheep." I am interested in who actually did the singing, though. The credits are noticeably absent.

More specifically for anybody looking for a recording of this song, it is the fourth in a collection of songs by Schubert called "Schwanengesang" (literally, "Swan Song") which was compiled after his death. It was originally written for a solo voice (usually a baritone) with piano accompaniment (in which form it has been recorded any number of times, my particular favorite being the one by the German baritone Thomas Quasthoff); and while I'm sure it must have been recorded by a boys choir somewhere along the line, I was unable to find one available anywhere online as I write this.

This song, I think, is one of the most beautiful and heart-felt pieces of music ever written; and among the many things I love about this movie is how the song so wonderfully symbolizes the friendship between Landy and Taylor. Notice in particular how, after he overhears Taylor denying their friendship to his schoolmates, we see Landy sitting in that wide open field where he and Taylor would meet in secret and "do music", but now alone with his harmonica, playing not his Blues but the Schubert; and that tells us even more clearly than his grief-stricken face how much his friendship with Taylor meant to him, and how hurt he is by Taylor's seeming betrayal (fortunately Taylor knew exactly where to find him, and Landy sees how sorry and equally sad Taylor is over what happened). Also, at the end of the movie, when Paul finds himself standing next to Landy and having no choice but to sing it with him, it gives us hope that the song will speak to Paul and cause him to have a change of heart.

This film was originally made for the Disney Channel, which for several years before and after its premiere would honor Black History Month in February by scheduling films and other programming with similar themes (they have sadly ceased to do so in more recent years). One of those movies, the title of which escapes me, centered around the friendship between the white son of a slave owner and a black boy his age who is separated from his mother when the white boy's father sells her (the white boy witnesses this, and is so moved by it that he gives the toy he was playing with to the black boy in an attempt to console him). The boys grow up together, and most of the rest of the film deals with their teaming up as conductors on the Underground Railroad. For some truly inexplicable reason, I never taped that movie when it was shown; and now since it has stopped being shown, I have been wanting to get a copy of it (but not having the title makes the search for it well nigh impossible). If somebody can clue me in, I'd be most grateful. :-)

And yes, I just finished watching "Perfect Harmony"!

Could you be thinking of "Race to Freedom: The Underground Railroad" (1994)? I haven't actually seen that one. But it came up (with 24 others) when I used IMDB's Advanced Search function, the Movie Keyword Analyzer (MoKA).

Go to the IMBD site's Search page, click on Advanced search, which takes you to a page where you can select a subcategory (such as "genre", "language", etc.). Select "keywords". You can enter single words, or phrases; if a phrase, be sure to put a hyphen between the words. (For example, to get the list mentioned above, I entered underground-railroad" [but _without_ quotation marks].)

You may be able to enter more than one phrase per search, separating the phrases with a forward slash; anyway I saw such _results_ (example: results for another search I made was flying-car/experiment-gone-wrong/absent-mindedness . From this I infer that entering any one, two, or all of these phrases might have borne results.
