The french film is much better.

I believe the French movie is different. It is not "better". The relationship of the foster parents is completely different. The risk-taking of the girlfriend in the French movie is outrageous. Although there are some similarities, the differences are most remarkable. The young boy's acting in the Le Grand Chemin is promoted by his father being the movie director and writer. I feel both movies are great, but for different reasons.

I have both on dvd, and it is in my always-to-be-humbled opinion that "Le Grand Chemin" is superior of the two.

I'm a tad bit confused by the previous post in which it is stated: "The young boy's acting in the Le Grand Chemin is promoted by his father being the movie director and writer."

What does being related to the director have to do with an acting performance? That isn't fair to the child, Antoine Hubert, who did a very good job of acting as the young co-lead in this film.

It wouldn't be fair to assume that in the latter production, "Paradise", the on-screen marriage between Don Johnson & Melanie Griffith is promoted by the fact that they were married in real life at the time this film was made.

"Le Grand Chemin" is beautiful, radiant, and doesn't dilute itself in certain scenes to appease public approval. If you watch both films, you'll see how the American version, (like so many U.S. films), does exactly this. Read the novel and see which one is a more faithful adaptation to the literary work.

I like nearly all the actors in America's 1991 release of "Paradise", but I cannot say it equals its predecessor in comparison.

One of the posters in the comments section gave Paradise a ten. That would make Le Grand Chemin an eleven. Understand both movies are excellent, and Siskel&Ebert had to be taking downers.

Actually I've oly just become aware that Le Grand Chemin was remade as Paradise. Although I'm a regular movie goer I've never heard of Paradise, possibly it never played here in the UK. I do, however, own Le Grand Chemin on dvd and watch it from time to time. One point that seems to have escaped attention is that the original novel - adapted and directed by the novelist - was autobiographical so that in casting his own son he was bringing a third generation into play. It's almost impossible for me to believe that anyone could make a finer film than Le Grand Chemin which excels in every - writing, directing, acting - department but should it ever come my way I will certainly be prepared to give Paradise a chance.

"Paradise" stars acting legend Melanie Griffith. "Le Grand Chemin" does not. Enough said.
