Severely Underrated

I'm not going to pretend like I'm some movie buff or anything, but this is such an underrated movie.

I know it's probably been said previously in the board, but I just wanted to bring it back to the surface!! Everyone should give this movie a chance - I truly cannot fathom why people don't like it...

It's my (probably) favourite movie (along with JP and the fugitive); I think it's just perfect. Oh and has a great selection of quotes too :)

Anyone who agrees, then join in! Anyone who disagrees, please say why!

I've lost count how many times I've seen this but I do remember the first time I saw it(waaaaayyyyy back when it first hit video). Had an absolute ball watching this. Proof that Sly can rock in a comedic pic when he's got good material(the best comedians around couldn't have saved Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot).

Who says violence is not the answer?

reply

yes, this is prolly stallone's most underrated film! it is absolutely hilarious! i love it!!! i laugh the whole way thru the movie!

reply

I catch it anytime it comes on cable...I think it's hilarious.

I'm your huckleberry...

I agree. Very under rated.
Plus, just trying to keep track of the comings and goings of the bags will keep you entertained.

Agreed. Read my user comment "An underrated gem" and you'll understand why I love this movie so much.

I must respond. I remember watching this movie way back when. It is one of the funniest, and most unique films I have ever seen.
I can't find it on DVD, video or elsewhere. They never play it on TV. Too bad, I would like my wife to watch it. I'm sure she'd love it.

Try Amazon. That is probably the only place you'll find it now. I managed to get the DVD from HMV.

*** SPOILER *** SPOILER *** SPOILER *** SPOILER ***

I have just seen “Oscar” again. I saw it originally in the theatre and enjoyed it immensely, However, I believe I do understand why it is rated so low.

First off, “Oscar” is what used to be called a madcap comedy, and no madcap comedy has done well since the thirties.

Secondly, “Oscar” has neither a hero or anti hero, nor is there a single main character who represents the viewpoint of the audience.

'Snaps' is a gangster, and if we are to understand that innuendo about being out of town on Valentine’s Day, he is a murderer. His henchmen are variously wisecracking, threatening, or dim, but all are armed to the teeth.

‘Snaps’ daughter, Lisa, although full grown, is still a whiny child, willing to marry any man who will get her out from under her father’s thumb, to where there is more scope for her talent to have her own way.

Dr. Poole lives with his mother, yet resents her possessiveness, and is willing to marry an unknown woman (except that she is a gangster’s daughter) for sufficient financial backing to further his career.

"Snaps" wife ‘Sofia’ is both jealous of her husband’s attentions and willing to consign her daughter to any man who will marry her presumably pregnant daughter to save the family name of her well-know crime boss husband.

‘Snaps’ other unknown daughter starts out with her young man by lying about her identity, then seeks to have a stranger back up her lie, until said young man commits himself to marriage.

And of course, her young man is, at first, an embezzler, but later becomes an outright thief.

The bankers are crooked, the cops are show boaters, and the media accommodating to both cops and crooks.

Even their original working class maid uses her position to snag herself a rich banker fiancé.

Thus stated, I find ‘Oscar’ not that dissimilar from Billy Wilder’s 1961 film, “One, Two, Three,” which sent up communists, capitalists, the Berlin Wall, Coca Colonialism, while mixing harsh interrogation methods with hit parade music, upward mobilization with a men’s room attendant and getting strudel at the office with an executive wife.

The one thing that further harmed “One, Two, Three,” from which “Oscar” did not suffer, was that the former came out during a particularly tense period during the Cold War.

“One, Two, Three” eventually overcame its disadvantages to become a precursor to the great Cold War masterpieces that followed.

‘Oscar’ did not suffer from such political opposition. At least no one felt compelled to apologize for its existence at a foreign film festival, as was the case with "One, Two, Three." Nor was such opposition required to sully its reputation.

“Oscar” is a good, entertaining comedy, with a sightly dark script, uniformly excellent performances, and split second comedic direction, but it is no masterpiece.

Give "Oscar" another forty years, and it too may outlast its detractors.

How did she "use her position" to "snag herself a rich banker fiancé"? They met the day he "called on" Lisa. So because Nora was working that day, that means that she used her position to snag herself a rich husband? I'm sorry. But I disagree with your assessment.

And who said that Bruce Underwood was a banker? I must have missed that part.

I adore this film., and for the longest time thought I was the only person who put this film on their top 5 favorite movies. I am a movie buff ( I perfer the term "film carnoisseur" ) and I've seen over 3000 films. So for this one to make my top five is saying something. I agree taht it is grossly underappreciated, and always recommend it to people. I't nice to see others on imdb saying that they love it too.

"Oscar" is definitely one of my favs too! I just watched it again for the first time in years and I laughed all the way through... It was just as funny as I remember it! Such a great movie all around!

Anyone looking for the DVD might want to check out WalMart. I just picked it up in their $5 bin. Best 5 bucks I've spent for a while.

I love this movie! I just got to watch it again, it's been years since I last saw it. I was going to post a thread how much I appreciate this movie and it's so under rated, then I saw this one and just decided to post my thoughts here.

This movie is comic gold! Everybody in this movie is hilarious! Even Kirk Douglas's small part in the beginning as "Pops". The cast was excellent, come on you have Don Ameche, Tim Curry, Peter Reigert, Harry Shearer and Sly was funny as hell. Even Chazz was hilarious, the parts with him and the Linguist were some of the funniest in this film.

Just good clean comedy you won't find in movies any more.

Totally agree. Excellent film - lots of fun.

I wish more people knew about it.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

This movie is so good on so many levels: Marisa is funny, Tim, Chazz and Peter carry this flick (especially Chazz...gotta love him in this role), Ornella's stunning beauty adds necessary light to it, Sly is actually funny in this too, and the plot and speed are right up there with Clue, another Tim Curry great!

I've seen this movie so many times. Such a good laugh, but it started to get old for me so I gave it a break. Then I quoted a line from it to my teenage daughters and we had to watch it just so they could see what I was on about. Well, I am back in love again, and they loved it too. So underrated and such a great movie.
