A terrific film I can't watch

The stabbing is one of the most brutal, disturbing murder scenes I've ever watched. Not because of any graphic violence, but because of its cold, deliberate, remorseless, viciousness. They filmed it too realistically, which is to their credit. It's a remarkable movie, but the murder is too horrifying and I can''t watch it.

Director Carl Franklin in an interview said that he used the video recording as a way to show the humanity of the victims. In the end I think this made the whole sequence most brutal as Pluto watches the video playback, eating the birthday cake with the victims lying on the floor, right before he stabs them to death.

Which stabbing? There were so many of them.

OK, I presume you mean the opening sequence where about six people were killed in two different houses in L.A. Yeah, the first 10 minutes of the movie are really hard to watch. But it's certainly not gratuitous, as the truly evil & dangerous nature of the two bad guys is established with no shadow of a doubt.

I agree. I remember seeing this when it came out on VHS back in '93. I was watching it with my mom and when that scene came up before the stabbing, my mother said, "It's gonna get worse" (meaning the stabbing). It sent chills up my spine when I saw it, but I stuck with it b/c I wanted to see the killers get theirs...it turned out to be a great movie.

It reminded me of an old Charles Bronson movie, "Messenger of Death", I saw where a home full of women and young children was invaded by two outlaws and they brutally shot all of them with a shotgun one by one.

It really is horrifying. It's a perfect example of how blood and gore don't make a scene horrifying and disgusting. What makes a scene like that horrifying is by showing the humanity of the victims and the inhumanity of the murderers. It's not easy to do, and you don't do it with over-the-top violence.

Just watched this and it was quite disturbing. The lack of blood & gore made it quite realistic. I almost stopped watching after this scene.

Yeah, it reminded me of a scene in the movie Zodiac. The Zodiac stabs two of his victims and there's this eerie silence except for the screams. There wasn't blood if gore splattering everywhere either.

Okay I get the Fassbender hype!

Everybody here is going on about the stabbings, but I was much more bothered by the suffocation(s).
