I seem to be in the minority here...

But I think this is overrated. The acting was uniformly awful, except from Michael Beach (whose role didn't require much acting). The cinematography was excellent, but it felt longer than it was. The detectives were uninteresting and the scene between Bill Paxton and his ex-lover was written like a soap opera.

They managed to make the killers seem kind of boring. And most of the cops seemed like uninteresting big city a-holes or hillbilly buffoons.

And could they force any more smoking into the movie? It looks like one long cigarette ad. This movie is a generic glob of poo on the toilet seat of life.

Well, I respectfully disagree.

As for all the smoking, a great many people still smoked at that time (early Nineties), especially people on the lower rungs of society, and more especially in poor, rural areas. Even I did. I didn't quit for good until October, 1996.

How can it be overrated when next to no one has ever even heard of it? And there´s nothing much wrong with anyone´s acting even though it´s one of Thornton´s least impressive works and that Williams chick did seem kind of awkward at times. All in all an interesting, mellow character driven drama that´s excellently shot and scored to boot; I think it´s better than Franklin´s other, better known film Devil In A Blue Dress.

I found the acting to be passable, but I agree there was something off in this one. The real problem was the lackluster script, which took any chance away from the actors to portray genuine and interesting characters. They obviously had *some* depth but it wasn't enough.

I felt cheated when the movie ended. Paxton's character got a nice little arc when he bonded with his son, but everyone else? Boom, quick death, which left me unfulfilled. Sure the other 3 were "bad guys", but give them some kind of meaningful resolution or dialogue or something before they die. We spent a lot of time with them, but in the end all they really offered was a means to keep us titillated with tension and violence. No deeper thought process required.

Someone in another thread compared this movie to No Country for Old Men and I had to laugh. NCFoM gave us much more realistic and interesting characters and opportunities to ponder the motivations of said characters. This one gave us a couple scenes of brutal violence and a mundane story arc where a country bumpkin cop ends up accepting his biracial son.
