What was up with Jan?

I've seen this movie many times over the years. I think I was drawn to it, at first, because Holly Hunter and Richard Dreyfuss had so much chemistry in the movie 'Always'.

Even though they didn't have the same type of chemistry in this movie, I liked it for different reasons. I enjoyed the big family SL. I really enjoyed ALL the actors in this movie and I enjoyed all the FUN Sam and Renata had throughout their brief courtship and marriage.

One thing I don't understand. Why was Jan so against Sam, especially in the beginning? I mean, wasn't she having an affair while she was engaged to her, now, husband? It's not like she had such a great track record that she could be so judgemental and, even if she DID, it still doesn't give her an excuse to be so stand-offish when it came to Renata dating Sam.

Peter was so right when he held Jan back, on the ice, and said, "He makes her happy, can't you see that?"

I know Sam was a bit much but even a blind person could see how happy he and Renata were as a couple.

I would be opposed to my sister dating Sam as well. Sam was obnoxious to the point where he comes off as being disrespectful. In the end, you realize that he has a "big" personality.

Yes, his vulgarity put everyone off, but I think she was just a little jealous too. I think she would have loved to be spoiled and adored like that.

Now that's an idea I didn't think of and an interesting one, too. Probably a mixture of what every poster has offered up but the jealousy thing...yeah...I can see that now.

Obviously, there was something lacking in her own committed relationship for Jan to have extracurricular activity elsewhere. Maybe she was somewhat jealous in that Renata and Sam seemed to have a near perfect relationship in the beginning. However, I believe that Jan was primarily repulsed by Sam's over-bearing behavior.
