On TCM

I believe this is playing, subbed, on TCM in January. Anyone know the time/date?

reply

It is on January 26th, I'm not sure what times. But I'm feeling that one is at 8 PM ET, and the other later than that. Personally, I will be taping it, because we have no idea when Disney will release it.

hi!

i really would like to see this film very much. i've been looking into ordering a japanese copy, but have been hesitating because i don't own a region free dvd player, and so far i've only found region 2 or 3 dvds, and i live in canada.

anyways, if you wouldn't mind taping this on dvd for me, i'd be incredibly grateful. obviously i'd pay for the dvd/shipping costs etc.

email me if you're interested. thanks! :)

This would be a perfect opportunity to get a digital video recorder. Who knows when you'll have the chance to see this movie again? Goodness knows, you'll never forgive yourself if you miss it.

Much kudos to TCM for including two of Takahata's movies in the monthlong Ghibli series.

It's playing twice, and so far they (TCM) have been running the Anime with an english dub early in the night, and the original Japanese subtitled later. Not sure what they'll do here, but it will be worth recording both airings, just in case.

reply

There is no English dub for the movie, so we'll see it twice with the real soundtrack. That's great because it gives you a better chance of seeing it; after the first showing, you can grab some friends for the encore.

Their showing it tonight, January 26th on TCM at 8:00pm EST.

I can't wait to see this, I have heard nothing but good news about it.

reply

I just finished watching it. I was surprised that it was good, at first I thought it was weird. Then I liked it. It reminded me a lot of To Kill a Mockingbird, or at least the book.

I think what makes this a great movie is how the 10-year-old girl often appears with the adult version at the same time. BTW, the song going on near the end of the credits is The Rose, which is the infamous song in Napolean Dynamite when he does the happy hands club :)

reply

I didn't know this was going to be on tonight, and to be honest, I've never heard of this film before. The point is, I just watched it and LOVED it. I'm definately going to buy this if I get a chance!

reply

I just finished watching and it was good. I like how it shows that animated films can be real stories about the human condition and not just some kooky animals cavorting around for 90 minutes.

reply

I just finished watching this movie. I'm not usually too emotional but I damn near lost it during the ending credits. That song is haunting. And it just makes me want to learn Japanese all the more.

TCM is doing a great thing airing these movies for people to get a look at a cleaner story telling in the anime field. Especially since so many people get the idea that anime is just violence and 'near-beer' porn since that seems to be all most vendors want to sell. I've been a fan of this type of film for only a few years now but it's definately going to remain a constant in my library. Now if only I could get it on DVD.

rofl, I was happy to see the end result in the credits. I was sitting there like "wtf....she had better go back to him....why isnt she going?" and then her childhood friends kind of dragged her, which was cool.

reply

I thought this film was great (kinda reminds me of Cinema Paradiso), even if it kinda dragged in the middle. The childhood flashback scenes made up for whatever flaws the film has, I love the minimalist approach Takahata used for those scenes. My favorite scenes were young Taeko floating in the air and of course, the Felliniesque ending.

I also understand now why Disney is having a hard time releasing this on DVD, hopefully they can always release it under the Miramax label (along with another adult-themed Ghibli film, Ocean Waves) just like they did with Princess Mononoke, especially with the recent Disney/Pixar merger. I wonder who will be doing the voices though?

You stay classy! :)

With new new regime in place, we can hope that the remaining Ghibli films see an American release. There's still the fear of the American Taliban creating a controversy, and it would be a challenge to market the film since, like much of Takahata's work, it's the polar opposite of the "Disney brand." Again, as John Lasseter is now in charge of animation at Disney, we may see some better treatment. We'll have to see how that all turns out.

And, of course, the ending is particularly effective. I would say my two favorite scenes would have to be 1)the sunrise in the safflower fields, and 2)Taeko-chan singing the Hyokkori Hyoutan Jima song while walking into the sunset. It's an emotional ride; the whole picture is.

yes. excellent! sad and funny and tender and even thought provoking.

Well, if it isn't the leader of the wiener patrol, boning up on his nerd lessons.

I actually think, with the new management at disney, there is a good chance that future Ghibli releases will get a full US box office treatment. This meaning a 3000 plus screen release, along with some great promotion.

I noticed that the scene when Toshio bites into a cucumber was shortened/cut/some frames were missing. I wonder, if it was only my recorder. If it was intentionally cut I wonder if somebody knows if more scenes were shortened.

If you want to know when things are on on TCM, they have a magazine. Im a subscriber, and its less than a dollar a copy if you subscribe for a year. The magazine is called Now Playing.
