I saw that and thought "I wonder if that's Hyoukkori Hyontajima" because Morning Musume did a version of the theme tune. Then I heard the intro of the song on the film and was so freaked out and then started singing along with Taeko ^_^
I haven't been able to find any episodes of it anywhere although I think there's a game of it that you can download.
There has to be at least one website lurking around that cites Hyokkori Hyotan Jima. I am aware of one contemporary anime show that ends with a karaoke bar singing the theme song (just like Poro Poro), and I'm also aware of a videogame based on the show for Sega's Megadrive in Japan.
shareI looked it up on Google, Wikipedia, and AskJeeves, but nothing turned up.

Best thing ever.
Bingo! I found it!

However, it's in Japanese, of course. Use BabelFish web page translation to fix that.

The grammar will be off, but it'll be readable, at least. Below is my signature, which has nothing to do with this. Check that out too.

Thanks, I appreciate you finding a link of the puppet show for me.
share NHK Japan TV had a list of all their shows, including kids' stuff. The show HYOKKORI HYOUTANJIMA,
which means "Pop from the Gourd Island" {pop from the gourd means " a surprise" a la Jack-in-the-Box}
is there. Japan's Post Office also put out a stamp with the characters (Don Gabacho, etc).
