Question for experts:

Does anyone know whether the television program Taeko watches a child is a real program from that period, a parody of something else specific, or just made up?

From the FAQ: http://nausicaa.net/miyazaki/opp/faq.html#puppet

Q: What is the puppet TV show Taeko was watching?

The show is called "Hyokkori Hyotanjima" (Popped-up Gourd Island). It was an immensely popular children's show at that time (1966). Several characters that appeared in the film were amazingly realistic. The theme song of the show was also very popular. We see Taeko getting over her disappointment, singing this song with the refrain "We don't want to cry, so let's laugh - Go ahead!" For other cultural aspects of this movie, see the script.

BTW, in Youtube is the opening of the original TV program, which Taeko sings to cheer herself up.

Thanks, again.

I'll mark you down as a friend, for when I need you in the future.

Did I mention I loved the film?

Thank you for this, and especially, for the links! It's always good when you can put something in the right context! I mean, in the film Taeko appears under the rainbow and next to the baloon; it's exactly the same rainbow and baloon as in the programme, only with Taeko! That's so nice to know!

I was also thinking, maybe a future film will show a 1980's child in the context of "Les mondes Engloutis" (or "Shagma", or "Spartakus and the sun beneath the sea", depending on the language;) it was a programme that had children and not-so-children all over the world crazy in the late 1980's...)
