Is this anyone else's absolute favorite film?

I'm not just talking Ghibli here: I'm talking in general. It's been my number 1 for almost two years now, but I haven't seen anyone else mentioning it as his or her number 1 (although I do know a couple of people who place it among their favorites). Since this is the film's IMDb board, I figured I might find some other fans here. In case you're wondering, this is my top 10 of all time:

1. Only Yesterday
2. Stalker
3. 2001: A Space Odyssey
4. 8 1/2
5. Ran
6. Come and See
7. Once Upon a Time in America
8. Pierrot le fou
9. El sur
10. The Wild Bunch

And this would be a rough top 10 Ghibli films:

1. Only Yesterday *****
2. My Neighbor Totoro **** (top 100)
3. Whisper of the Heart **** (used to be in my top 100)
4. Spirited Away ****
5. Grave of the Fireflies ****
6. I Can Hear the Sea ****
7. Princess Mononoke ****
8. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind ****
9. Laputa: Castle in the Sky ***
10. Howl's Moving Castle ***

That's a bold statement. I think I'll def go to see that then at the IFC Center (doing a Ghibli retrospective). My current two favorites are Princess Mononoke (just saw it last night again, soo good, Disney meets Kurosawa), and Totoro

It's my favourite Ghibli film.

I noticed you placed El Sur at number nine. Have you seen Spirit of the Beehive by Erice? - that's my favourite film.

reply

The Spirit of the Beehive is in my top 50.
But Only Yesterday is no longer my favorite film now (although it's #2). It's The Tree of Life.

all i can say about Only Yesterday is Pure Magic from start to finish.

Without Mercy
Man is like a beast
Even if you are hard on yourself
Be merciful to others.

Ocean Waves, Whisper of the Heart, Kiki's Delivery Service, 5 Centimeters Per Second, From Up On Poppy Hill, Wolf Children, and Garden of Words are all especially great.

There are many one-season anime TV shows that capture the slice-of-life with character development/detail as well.

Just gave the movie a re-watch and bumped it up to my #2 slot. Check out my list, see what you think, and give me suggestions of what I should watch. I only recently started getting into movies though so there is a lot that I haven't seen. I'll probably check out your top 10 films as well!
