Some girls start as early as 8 years old but the majority I know started at 11. In reality leaving it till 10 is leaving it a little late. But this was the 1960's. Back then women barely talked to each other about their bodies, these conversations were short and infrequent. Mothers used to leave 'becoming a woman' style books in their daughters rooms and that was the education provided.
They don't inform boys about periods at that stage because they might (will) tease girls about it. For a girl learning about this thing that's gonna happen to you every month for the rest of your life is AWFUL. You didn't ask for it, you don't want it, and you certainly don't want boys asking and mocking you about it.
Why do people so frequently get told to read the book on a movie database?
