Does anyone know the relevance

of the shot of the clown ball falling to the floor in that scene with Olivier and Paul? It didn't make any sense to me. I thought, when I first saw that scene, that Olivier was going to do something to him because he was looking at him really strange.

Also, it kind of bothered me when Olivier offered to go into the bathroom with Paul near the end, even though he'd just rescued him and brought him to the police; after all, he had a reputation with bathrooms.

I *think* it might symbolise the (excuse the platitude) "loss of innocence" - or the (tragic) end of childhood, if you will.

But the truth is I haven't seen this fim in many years, so I may be totally off.
I hope somebody can give a better explanation.
