IRAN, REALLY???

Just go to Youtube and watch videos of how beautiful and clean Iran is. It's really not that set back and conservative as countries like Saudi Arabia (OUR DAMN ALLY). You don't see troops standing in the streets with rifles ready to attack any woman who shows her hair. They approach them but with not with damn guns. In fact, the way she had her hair covered in the beginning when they landed at the airport is far more common than the way his family members dressed. Good film, and I don't doubt the truth of the way she was treated, but greatly exaggerated when it comes to the portrayal of the country as a whole.

they couldn't even get the simple fact right that Iran was a friend of the USSR and vice versa. Look at the beginning during the friday prayers with the knives covered with blood and the words of (Israel, Saudi, and USA, and USSR) Simply untrue as Russia has and continues to stand with Iran until this day.

They may have gotten a detail wrong here and there, but don't forget
that there was a war going on during the time of these events. Considering
the fact that the Shah was deposed in 1979 and Iran was declared an Islamic state, I don't think it's too far fetched to believe that the dress code was
very rigidly enforced when they arrived in Iran in 1984. Regarding the overall look of the city, I'm sure that is very authentic.

You have to remember the time the story took place, the mid 80's where Iran was our enemy and Khomeini had established a dictatorship. Maybe today it is a little different, but at the time it was hell.

reply

Well yeah,at that time even u were ur own enemy look how ur country was divived.and Ayatollah khomeini didn't establish a dictatorship or he wouldn't be elected as the man of the yrear in 1979 !

reply

Who elected Khomeini Man of the Year in 1979? It certainly wasn't us.

reply

Time magazine. They also elected Hitler and Stalin...twice.

Its not a popularity contest.

How about George W. Bush? Those guys are morons at TIME.

reply

Like I said, its not a popularity contest. Its an article that features and profiles a person, group, idea or object that, for better or for worse, has done the most to influence the events of the year.

Basically, its about who was in the news the most.

To OP.

Exactly how oould a deeply theocratical society (at least at the time of Khomeini) which derives its laws from the Quran, feel anything but hate for a superpower (the USSR) which denies the existence of Allah? All religion was persecuted and ridiculed in the USSR.

As far as many muslims are concerned those who deny that Allah exists, are plain and simple heretics.

Have you any idea what happened to any Iranian spreading communist ideas in Iran?

Did you know that there's a myth in the muslim world that it was THEY who brought the Soviet Union down? They honestly believe Afghanistan was the battleground in which Islam triumphed over communism.

Then there's the muslims in Chechnya and other muslim dominated parts of the ex-USSR.

Finally, have you ever watched the news of what happens to Middle Eastern and African foreigners in the streets of Moscow? They are herassed and beaten by gangs, and the law just sees through the fingers.

Judging by how they treat foreigners in Moscow and the rise of many deeply xenophobic organisations, many believe Russians to be racists in general.

This is the same western propaganda (it exists everywhere not just in the Middle East) which makes ignorant fools believe China and the USSR were "good friends" when in reality they had a serious brake-up in the early 60's, and have still not forgotten that.

I agree however that Saudi Arabia is far more fanatical and conservative than Iran. Again Saudi Arabia is nowhere nearly as villified in media as Iran is.

Just another one of the biggest lies of History
In the the name of the same God that the very producers of such movies in holly wood try to make him forgotten
It is really easy to sit back & accept whatever lies they feed us in movies & not even giving the people of the nations being slandered by holly woood producers, the benefit of the doubt. This is not the first nor the last time that we see such movies drag not one,not 10 but millions of ppl's names through the mud just by making a movie most of which are made in the name of Comedies, the others dramas "based on truth".America's policy towards Iran & the middle east is obvious & its media tries to leave thae same impresion in public minds by showing the middle eastern ppl as a neanderthal generation, violent with no culture or civilization.
if they wanna let ppl know the truth why don't they tell them about the plans made by them & Betty -who is a member of CIA -several years before marrying Dr.Mahmud?Alice Sharif ,one of Betty's friends that also married an Iranian & now lives a happy ,rich life in Iran says"She betrayed all of us because we had a great life in Iran & were financially Supported by our educated husbands".The lies shown in this movie simply didn't include the cruelty of such a she-beast who prevented a compassionate father from seeing his only daughter ;a great unrecovereable sorrow that eventually lead to his death!
Before judgement hear both sides of the argument,if you believe in Justice
