How can that simpleton Ebert think this was racist?

There was nothing racist about this movie at all. It does not promote the idea that western ideals are better than Islamic ones, only that a certain religious sect became too extreme for someone of western values.

Simpleton Ebert took it as an attack on Islam or Iran, where it shouldnt have back then and should not have been now.

This was the experience of one woman, and it should have been respected, not questioned or bashed by the critics.

He felt that the film didn't try to show us the Muslim point of view. No Muslim was painted in a favorable light and we weren't even aloud to understand what they said because they didn't use subtitles. He still recommended the film, okay? He gave it three stars. He still had those questions, which are good points.

Um, yes, many were, including the Muslim Iranians who helped her escape. (I do agree that I wished subtitling would have been used when they were speaking a different language.)

Ebert is not a simpleton, he is one of the most respected movie critics out there.

Naturally he is not without flaws, no critic ever is truly consistent, but he raises some very good questions.

Btw, this movie didn't do too well when released so I guess he had a point after all.

The area where her husband was from was very fanatical, they even mention this. The film did show that there were nice people who were trying to help Betty and her daughter.

t is really easy to sit back & accept whatever lies they feed us in movies & not even giving the people of the nations being slandered by holly woood producers, the benefit of the doubt. This is not the first nor the last time that we see such movies drag not one,not 10 but millions of ppl's names through the mud just by making a movie most of which are made in the name of Comedies, the others dramas "based on truth".America's policy towards Iran & the middle east is obvious & its media tries to leave thae same impresion in public minds by showing the middle eastern ppl as a neanderthal generation, violent with no culture or civilization.
if they wanna let ppl know the truth why don't they tell them about the plans made by them & Betty -who is a member of CIA -several years before marrying Dr.Mahmud?Alice Sharif ,one of Betty's friends that also married an Iranian & now lives a happy ,rich life in Iran says"She betrayed all of us because we had a great life in Iran & were financially Supported by our educated husbands".The lies shown in this movie simply didn't include the cruelty of such a she-beast who prevented a compassionate father from seeing his only daughter ;a great unrecovereable sorrow that eventually lead to his death!
