God this movie was awful!

I saw this on IFC and this movie made no sense. And I watch a lot of movies.

I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy.

I fully understand the point of the film and it is very affective. I have never in my life however seen something so disgusting, I am currently on the verge of throwing up right now. Now im not a squeamish person in the least I have seen some of the worst out there. *sigh* I cant handle animal brutality i suppose.

*******************SPOILER ALERT******************

I saw this film this morning, not a very good way to start the day! I don't think it "made no sense", I simply think it was poorly done.

It was basically an anti-animal research/experiment film. I got the message loud and clear, but the overall manner in which it was done was rather weak. (It was interesting to see musician David Van Teigham acting, I had no idea he was an actor.)

The doctor/researcher character was more a sociopath 'Frankenstein' than an actual person trying to do research to help people.

Firstly, the conditions the doctor/researcher conducted his experiments under were unsanitary and bizarre. There were no Biohazard bags etc. I also doubt any ‘normal’ researcher would be abusing the animals before doing the experiments. I would assume that hitting animals over the head with rocks surely isn’t part of normal animal research! Besides, causing brain damage to the animals might indeed affect any experiments he was conducting?

The scene with the local farmers dog caught in the trap was also not thought out properly. Anyone with half a conscience and/or half a functioning brain...would have noticed that the dog had a collar and was someone's pet! It was a small town, didn't the doctor/researcher think that the dog suddenly being missing would most likely lead people to him, knowing he was doing research on animals?

I guess we are supposed to assume the researcher was so driven and psychotic...he did his research by any means necessary?

I'm personally not in favor of animal research, especially where dogs, cats, chimps, rabbits and other small animals are concerned. It's highly doubtful that today animal researchers would get away with such abuse, especially since the advent of so many anti-research organizations world-wide. I don't really know if there is truly a way to do animal research humanely, but the guy depicted in this film was clearly wacko, vicious and uncaring.

The animal research scenes were ghoulish, morbid and depressing, though the script was so stilted, these scenes lost their impact, especially the horrific scene where the wife and her male friend discover exactly 'what' the husband is up to. I think there would have been a lot more screaming and general 'shock & horror' upon discovering the husband's freakish work. I would have thrown up, then fainted!

Another glaringly ridiculous aspect of this film was the fact the researcher's wife was way too smart to be so unaware of exactly 'what' her husband's experiments entailed. The wife was quite intelligent to not even question his work, especially since they were married for awhile. She would have never been so in-the-dark about his work.

The acting was pretty good, considering they were dealing with a sub-par script. I do realize the director wanted to make this film both a horror film and a commentary on animal research. Though, that also made it very inconsistent, because you didn’t know in what direction the film wanted to go.

After watching this film, hug your pet today, even if its a reptile!

Clicking around imdb led me somehow to this movie and your post. I thank you for all you have written...I don't think I could EVER watch this and now, thankfully I don't have to but at least I still get the idea. (I kinda feel sick merely reading your comment!)

...have you ever seen a human heart? It looks like a fist covered in blood.
