winding way

Trivial point: at the beginning Tom Waits sings about returning after his death to this good old world, when he'll be rolling down 'winding way'. But he pronounces it 'win-ding' not 'wine-ding'. If it's a mistake it's a strange one to make. Am I missing something? In fact 'winding' (as normally pronounced) as well as the obvious meaning of 'turning' would go with 'winding sheet' as it'll be Halloween.

"I beseech ye in the bowels of Christ, think that ye may be mistaken."

That has bothered me since 1992. Only Tom Waits can solve this caper.
