I suppose it's obvious...(spoilers)

...that the grotty scene with the seal (just unnecessary) very much mirrors the relationship between Mark and Monika. The seal representing Mark who seemed a little bit naive and sweet-natured and the slaughterer representing Monika who has her prey well within her sights.
