Besides Cronenberg...

Who else would you have wanted to direct an adaptation of Naked Lunch? I'm not saying that Cronenberg isn't a capable director or anything, I'm just asking who else would be brave enough to tackle the job. In my opinion, I think if given the chance, Takashi Miike would be an excellent choice. If you have seen some of his work (Ichi the Killer, Izo, Gozu, Visitor Q, Audtion, etc.), you can see that he can be the right man for the job on coming up with a "proper adaptation" of the book. Another one I see as a great choice would be Alejandro Jodorowsky. The Holy Mountain and El Topo alone shows how well he can handle Naked Lunch's content. He might even get a sort of connection with William S. Burroughs because of what he went through while writing the book, like that of how Jodorowsky went through drug use during production of Holy Mountain.

So yeah, who else do you think would have the balls for it?

Well, it won't be the first time Will Smith gets to talk to bug men that's for sure...

Daron Aronofsky - Nah. Overrated filmmaker.
David Lynch - A fair consideration.
Takashi Miike, yepp - I guess...
Terry Gilliam - Another fair consideration.
Richard Stanley - Visually maybe, but I'm still not impressed by his track record.

Lynch and Gilliam, I'd say; preferably Gilliam - sometimes Lynch gets in his own a55 ala INLAND EMPIRE.

I only know PI from Aronofsky. Anytime I see him on an interview, I dislike him. Seems very arrogant. Hey wait, that's also what Mickey said after the Wrestler shooting.

Richard Stanley, you name it, would make it look great. Don't know about the rest.

STUART GORDON would fit too, I think, it would just turn out rather trashy, visually. But then, regarding the story, it would be too much for him as his stories are mostly a bit flat and simple. Which is good, just no naked lunch.

I could definitely see Aronofsky tackling it but it would probably be the challenge of a lifetime. For anyone who's read the book, an honest adaptation is clearly impossible because there is no clear storyline or even a real idea of what is going on through out the entire book. Another person under drug influence might be able to glimpse into what what Burroughs junkie filled world was, but it would be a far cry from what he originally saw when he was writing Naked Lunch.
Are you the clown?
No, I'm Mary *beep* Poppins.

Fellini would have been perfect (see his adaptation of Satyricon).

He would have probably given a version much closer to the contents of Burroughs' novel than Cronenberg's films.

Pasolini may have done a good job with it too.
