OMG!!!

I have *just* watched this movie for the third time and I noticed these sounds too!

One of these sounds is the sounds when you kill a soldier...

But I don't think that the sounds are *from* DOOM. I think they are some of these "universal" sounds that are used in many many places, and maybe DOOM just borrowed them. Moreover, the movie had been made two years before DOOM was published.

I had seen this topic before I rewatched the movie, saw it and noticed the Doom sound but didn't think of this topic until coming back here.

As the above poster says, the sounds used in Doom were probably taken from a sound library that is either copyright free or you only need to pay for once.

I have heard the doors from Doom in many different films and the doors from Goldeneye (on N64) on TV shows. Pretty sure the animal scream for the Animality in MK3 has appeared elsewhere too.

reply

yeah apparently it's the sound of a camel in this film. doom used a lot of sounds that get used over and over in films, ads, tv, etc. even today...

reply

also, Doom didn't exist when this film was made, to state the obvious.

reply

That would be the "Wilhelm Scream".

(From Wikipedia)
The Wilhelm scream is a repeatedly used film and television stock sound effect first used in 1951 for the film Distant Drums. The effect gained new popularity (its use often becoming an in-joke) after it was used in Star Wars and several other blockbuster films as well as television programs and video games.

The Wilhelm scream has become a well-known cinematic sound cliché, and is claimed to have been used in over 140 films.

reply

Um, no it wouldn't. Soldiers in Doom don't utter a Wilhelm scream, and the camel in this scene didn't either. It's a different sound effect.

reply

Just finished my initial viewing and did not notice the sounds. I went back to check as soon as I read this post. Yep, it's the death sound from Doom. Interesting note, I watched Event Horizon for the first time last night and noticed the same "door open" sound was used for the same purpose in Event Horizon as it was in Doom. Copyright free sound effects, most likely.

Being that you are the most recent one to post a reply, could I bother you to be specific as to where in the film this sound takes place? I recorded it on my DVR from Sundance, so it's full of commercials. The 52:10 won't work for me because of the ads. Thanks for the help.

Sorry for the late reply. The scene takes place in Interzone, about half-way through the film, just after Lee kills the centipede in the bathroom. You can hear the death-sound of a Demon as Bill walks through a beaded door.

reply

Not a late reply at all. A late reply would be in 2017. LOL. Unfortunately, I deleted it from my DVR without remembering that I was keeping it on there for this very reason. I'll keep looking for it to be on again, as it pops up a few times a year on various DirecTV channels. If I didn't live in the boonies I could watch it on demand, but alas.....Hughesnet doesn't like "on demand." Bummer.

Thanks for the help.

And in doing so, inadvertently revealed your abilities as an agent! Write your report and leave Interzone tonight!!
