River Phoenix should have received an Oscar for this

River Phoenix acting is so amazing in this movie. I never understood why his performance wasn't nominated for an Oscar. Or do you think it was because this movie is about male prostitution and it did not fit to the Oscars during the beginning of the 90s?

It was too risqué.

reply

I agree, he was great in this. He was great in every role he had.

That's an interesting point. Do you think Hollywood's attitude towards male prostitution had regressed since the late 60s/early 70s, bearing in mind that 'Midnight Cowboy', which also features a male prostitute, won the Best Picture Oscar in 1970?

Do you mean that the Oscars didn't accept the film because it featured homosexual prostitution, rather than simply male prostitution? I definitely think Hollywood has, until the last decade or so, had a big issue with homosexuality, particularly male homosexuality, onscreen, which is amazing when you think how many gay people there are in the industry.

I'll tell you exactly why he wasn't nominated, heroin. Rodney had spilled the beans that he, River and Keanu were spiking heroin during the whole shoot.

So Gus or River didn't have to worry about a nomination.

The reason I went to see the film, was Keanu. When Keanu was young, he was certainly worth watching, even if he was reading the phone book.

River's performance should not have been ignored. To think that Anthony Hopkins won the award that year for Silence of The Lambs...makes me feel sad.

reply

No to take anything away from River, but are you saying that one of the greatest serial killer performances of all time was not worth an Oscar? Are you serious?

reply

Yes.

reply

Probably trolling.

reply

He's not trolling, but most certainly deluded. IMO Keanu Reeves is better than River, who spends half the film unconscious any way. Give me Hopkins playing Hannibal, over River playing Mike any day of the week.

reply

I agree River should have been awarded an Oscar for his performance, no question this was the best American movie of 1991

reply

I thought he was hammy, Hopkins has done much better. Remains of the Day is the best performance I've scene from the guy.

reply

Agreed.

I think Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs is not the great serial killer performance many think it to be. Not only that the first and second actor play Lecter so much better. They're much more subtle in their psychotic behaviour.

Because I'm nothing like you stanleyjim

Declaring your sexuality to an anonymous online pseudonym is indicative of psychosexual inadequacy, this is a forum for movies not a chat room to pick up dates.
With a pseudonym like stanleyjim you sound like a guy called Stanley who is into a guy called Jim, Stanley and Jim, Stanley loves Jim, but does Jim love Stanley and what does Stanley’s therapist have to say, perhaps Jim can’t afford to see a therapist and is frustrated that Stanley no-longer loves him in that special way he did last summer, under the trees down by the water, when Jim ran straight to Stanley and became Stanleyjim, Capital S for the dominant Stanley small j for the submissive Jim.

Academy doesn't care about indie films.
Also his acting was not that mind-blowing.

reply

It was certainly better then Anthony Hopkins...it was.

Why all the deletions? What are you guys afraid of? Can't stand crybabies, who call for deletions, it's stupid.

reply

Well i don't think so. It was kind of ridiculous at times though.

reply

If River had won an Oscar, he would have just hocked it for drugs so the Academy actually did him a favor.

reply

I imagine his friends would have supplied him.

He should have won an Oscar for every role he played. Especially MOPI and Stand By Me. He is not only my favorite actor but the best actor I have ever seen. He dug so deep into every role (even roles that were blandly written) and delivered a jaw-dropping and unbelievably powerful performance in each one of those roles, causing the audience to truly believe that he was who he was playing. Such raw, organic, breathtaking performances that can't be topped.
