Do you think that

Do you think Vada and Thomas J really loved each other as more than just friends? I mean, maybe the mood ring and other things were all signs of how long their relationship should have lasted.

I think you could interpret repressed feelings by Thomas J, but I think Vada viewed him as a possibility after the kiss.

I could be wrong, but from what I recall (possibly before or after she and Thomas kiss), Vada either tells the audience or Thomas himself that he would be her official second pick as a future husband if things didn't work out between her and the teacher she had a crush on (her presuming of course that he was interested in her at that age).

If it's been fifteen years or more, it's no longer a spoiler.

The way I interpreted it, Vada liked Thomas J back but at her age could never admit it... so her displaced feelings find their outlet in a "safe" object of adoration, the much too old teacher.
