We are as far removed from 1991 as 1991 was to 1972.
Time flies. I'm 27 and remember when the commercials were being played for this movie. Recently decided to watch it cause it was referenced on the daily show.
You smell like my dad in the 70s.
Time does fly. Even though I wasn't even a year old when this movie came out, it still feels like it just did not too long ago based on the fact that more movies with tones like this one came out around the time I became old enough to see that they just hit.

It's older than me because I'm only 18. I can't remember the first time I saw it. I think it was on TV when I was 9 or 10 and I got the DVD a few years later.

shareWow it sounds so weird when you say it like that... makes me feel old lol. I was 11 when My Girl came out... the same age as Vada in the movie... still remember seeing it in the theatre... I had never seen a movie up until that point that resonated with me like My Girl did... it stirred up so many different emotions in me and made me face a lot of my own fears at the time, as I was a lot like Vada and our lives were quite similar in a lot of ways (except I lost my dad instead of my mom)... this was something no movie had ever done to me before... and maybe even since... it's been one of my all time favourite movies ever since.

I was five when the movie came out and first saw it when I was six. My mother passed away of cancer when I was 8 and my dad remarried two years later. I did not realize it until seeing the movie again later in life how much Vada's life in the movie was so similar to my life. Vada's experiences in the movie almost foreshadowed events that would come later in my life.
I, like Vada, had a shy male friend with blond hair who wore glasses. I, like Vada, found accepting my step mom as a major part of my father's life and mine very hard. I acted out a lot to my step-mom, just like Vada did to Shelly. "My Girl" is such a great movie with wonderful acting, but is more than just to movie to me. It was so comforting and moving to see events played out in Vada's life that seemed so similar to mine. It helped me grieve hen my mom died I think.
I'm 55. My oldest daughter is 28. I remember he bawling over it. It made me cry, too. I don't cry at movies much.
shareI know what you mean, I'm 28 and this movie has been one of my many favorites. A classic that will stay within my heart forever and always. Both My Girl and My Girl 2 are great. BUT I will say the first one can never compare to the second!! "Long live My Girl!!"

My Girl was on TV last night and it's hard to believe it's almost 20 years old. Time does fly, indeed... I still remember watching this movie at my grandma's house, I remember everyone getting teary-eyed during the "he can't see without his glasses" scene. I was seven years old when this movie came out and the fact that it is almost two decades old makes me feel old

Wow, I feel old!
Just watched this tonight and cried as much as I always do. It got me thinking that this was probably the first movie I saw where a child dies. I don't remember how old I was but it was pretty traumatizing.
I'd love to see a reunion of Vada, Thomas J., Nick, Harry, Shelley and Phil. Even if it's just one of those Entertainment Weekly reunion photo shoots, that would be amazing!
