'My Girl' - Whose girl?

A sweet little movie, no doubt. But am I alone in finding the title (and signature song) and odd choice? Vada is our central character, but whose 'girl' is she? Her Father's? Her friend's? Ours? The song is basically a lovesong from a guy to a girl, isn't it?

It just seems..... Odd.

The movie gets promoted from her friend's perspective. He refers to her as "My Girl".

Ah, I must have missed that line. Went for snacks.

No problem. I don't think you'd be wrong though, in assuming the main character to referred to as "My Girl" by a couple of the other characters. They all thought very highly of her. Even her dad, as much as he neglected her. She played a special role in all of their lives. Perhaps her friend did the honors of naming the movie after her, because he was played by Macaulay Culkin, who at the time, was a bigger star than anyone else in the movie. They all contributed to "My Girl" being promoted as a family movie, but Macaulay Culkin was the main draw as a child star in this movie.
