re-rated PG-13?

Can someone please clarify for me, I could have sworn this used to be rated PG but was later re-rated PG-13. Or has it always been PG-13?

reply

i thought it was Pg too other than the death I am not sure why this would be a pg 13.

I think it's also because of some of the language and joint smoking reference.

Why they even bother to appeal the film to PG? It's not like they will lose money from it being PG-13 anyways. It's not like the R rated that restrict young kids from seeing it.

I could just be having a brain fart, but what joint smoking reference?

When you're 17 a cow can seem dangerous and forbidden...am I alone here?

reply

I often thought the reference to marijuana would get it a PG-13, the language in this film is beyond PG.

It's an oddity as to why Columbia/Sony went for an appeal, unless it was so the film could be intended for a younger audience.

In fact I often thought it'd be rated PG-13 for Emotional Thematic Elements, Drug References and Mild Language

The poem the blond girl in the writing class read mentioned lighting a joint after sex.

Saw your reply in my email, re-read my post and just had an absolutely "duh!" moment! Brain fart confirmed, but thanks for replying :D

It was originally rated PG-13 by the MPAA but then was re rated PG on appeal.

Please reply to the correct poster.

I laughed hysterically when I watched this at about 16 and finally understood that poem!
I really think people give kids credit for thinking waaaaay too far into things, particularly words. Until life experience taught me otherwise, 'joint' referred to knees, elbows and knuckles!

There's also some strong language in it, I personally think it should be PG-13.

It was initially PG-13 but they appealed it to be a PG and got away with it. To me the film is on the borderline between hard PG and soft PG-13.

Was this really intended to be a family film? I’m just saying if you want your film to be viewed by families you don’t throw in majijuana references, uses of the word shit, lines about 2 dollar hookers and a menstral cycle subplot

At the time the film came out what I read caused huge controversy was the misleading ads. People thought it was a cute little romance about first love fine for kids. People had no idea it took place in a mortuary and involved the death of a lovable young character. There were kids screaming and crying in the theater during the funeral scene. Despite the other factors, it was all the death and morbidity that really offended people at the time.
