This could've been the next GODFATHER
The Commission established the Five Families and the Chicago Mafia. But it just failed to be the next Godfather, and it spent so much time on romance and crap. Had it been a better depiction of real mob history, I'd wager if done properly it could be better than Godfather.
The Commission begged the question, "What if there could be reasonable peace inside of the criminal but prosperous mob lifestyle, with men choosing to put aside ego and learn how to work together so everybody wins? If you want to rule over everyone else like Caesar (boss of all bosses), you wind up dead in the street. So why not just get rich and show the world how powerful you can truly become instead? That way everybody's happier than they used to be.
I used to own this on DVD before selling it. The cast has a few talented actors, but overall feels very "B" movie despite the story having potential to be the definitive true tale of the Mafia in America featuring Lucky Luciano, Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky and Mad Dog Coll (crazy bastard I really enjoyed).
This movie could've been a classic, the perfect contrast to the tender feel of Godfather by being all about business, fury and power. It still had some cool moments, but a remake would be nice. I'm sure the feeble mob of today would like to watch a movie about their collectively powerful past.
