Hollywood follows Bollywood!

Mister Johnson (1990) by Bruce Beresford:

1. As far as I know, this is the first film where the Hollywood follows Bollywood, for a change! A great exception!
2. Around 1950, in Nigeria, Joyce Carey wrote a novel named Mr. Johnson. In 1985, Pradip Krishen adapted this book for his beautiful Hindi language film Massey Sahib and 5 (five) years later, An Australian film maker named Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy fame) adapted the same book & made a film of the same name.
3. Though both the movies are based on the same literary work, still they're very different in what they portray. Mr. Johnson the movie is all about questions as Roger Ebert had put it. Question about race, colonization & progress or modernity etc.
Film is well made but if you ask me I would prefer the Indian Hindi language version, any day, because the later version takes up the issue/s of British rule here in India, as simple as that & the former, obviously deals with the British empire & Africa.
4. I can't refrain here from stating that Mister Johnson is in my humble view, a modern day 'African film'. What I mean by this statement is that that it is, first & foremost shot differently. Departure from the 'Discovery channel' style camera work is the most notable point. Unbelievably, not a single African wild animal is shown in the movie & I thank God & the director for that!
