Where was Johnson educated?

I've always wondered if he traveled to London or was he educated in Africa? His attachment to all things British amazed me.

He was likely educated in missionary schools in Nigeria-there's no way he would have been able to go to England to get an education, he wouldn't have lasted a day! It's most likely he went to a college similar to Nelson Mandela's alma mater, Healdown, and got most of his higher education there.

I agree with that.

I still though am left wondering just WHAT he was exposed to that had Mr. Johnson so immersed in all things "British"? It was probably a vibe that I picked up that wasn't really there.

Thanks for the reply/answer!

He was exposed to a ton of 'Britain is everything' messages, enough to make him think that Nigeria is backward and Britain is the center of the universe. That's why he acts the way he does in the novel and movie.

Mandela was in some senses, an aristocrat, so his experience cannot be seen as indicative of an ordinary African in the early 20th Century.

It's been a good many years since I read the novel, but I don't recall this question being answered in the novel itself. What the movie makes clear in abundance is that Mr J is barely literate, as per his strange grammar and his inability to file things correctly- his general knowledge is abysmal- and he decidedly lacks common sense. What he does possess is a gift for numbers, and it is on the strength of this alone that he attains all the positions he holds in this story. In other words, he show little signs of being educated beyond the bare minimum and his talents are innate.

I'd still go with missionary taught, but nothing of the quality of Mandela's education.
