Uneven/off kilter movie

I'm in the middle of watching this movie as I type this, with the movie on pause, and I'm not even sure if I'm going to finish it. It's strangely uneven. Scenes just jump around, and there have been a few scenes sandwiched between others that had no continuity. No segueway or flow to them. Like, okay, so.....why did we just jump to this scene? This has something to do with...what exactly?? Also, a lot of what happens in a scene doesn't necessarily make initial sense, to me anyway. Like that one random scene where Mina was working at the motel front desk with whoever that male family member was (uncle?) and that one white guy comes in with a hooker asking about hourly room rates, and then Denzel shows up, trying to act all sneaky on the downlow, pretending to be "Mr. Biloxi" speaking in code to her about wanting her to come to Biloxi with him, as Mena won't acknowledge what he's saying and responds that No, they can't give him a rate that low, then Denzel sneaks back out the door, as Mena's (uncle?) complains about everybody wanting discounts. I'm watching that going, what the heck is goin' on in this scene??? I mean the dialogue is so strange and unnatural. The car accident scene at the beginning.........made no sense, but mainly because of the way the dialogue amongst the characters played out. Just so weird. Then the scene showing another male member of Mina's family waking up in the middle of the night with what we're supposed to guess is an erection (because he lifts the bed sheets and looks forlornly down towards his crotch) then he rolls on top of his wife/girlfriend, whoever she is, to try to get some, and she shoves him off, so he's like fine, and puts on some headphones to watch some motivational speaker on TV talking about how to make more money or something. So, so strange and disjointed.

So many scenes are so weird and uneven with the plot that happens within them, as well as the way in which they don't connect at all to the scenes that come before and after them, along with the strange and unnatural dialogue. It's the most off kilter movie I've watched in ages.

I did enjoy the scenes at the beginning that took place in Africa. It was very beautiful scenery, full of peace and beauty, with nice people, and they did a good job of showing why Mina's father was so despondent about having to leave their home in Uganda. If I lived my whole life there surrounded by that kind of peace and beauty with all those nice people and was forcibly evicted and found myself living in...........Mississippi of all places, I'd be upset for years after too. I also think the scenes with Demetrius' family were okay, and seemed very realistic of how a black family in the south would be with their interactions. The rest of the movie though.....just so odd.
