Somebody explain Anil's 'problem'?

Why would his wife be so "frigid" immediately following their wedding? We see a few scenes where his advances are shunned and his frustration is apparent. Am I missing something here...

I wondered about that too. I think it's supposed to set up a contrast between the cold arranged marriage that society approves, and the passionate relationship Mina and Demetrius have that's shunned by everyone.

I know, that's why it's so hard to imagine arranged couples doing it, even my own folks. (though India is overpopulated)

Men don't turn down sex, arranged or otherwise.

Love in these situations grows through occupational interaction or the couple feels comfortable with one another and have known each other since children. They usually know one another at least.

That's how it tends to actually work out. But I think the movie's goal in including these scenes was to set up the contrast I mentioned before.

I never thought about it that way. That indeed seems to be the meaning of those scenes in the film. I was watching the film and felt annoyed watching these scenes because I felt it added nothing to the actual story, apart from the fact that Anil not "getting some" partly leads him to take the decision with regard to not working anymore with Jammubhai/Jay in a state of frustration.

reply

Simple. Anil was a nasty little turd. I would shun his advances too.

It might have something to do with the fact that men seem to know very little, and don't care to know, anything about female anatomy or sexual response. I was once listening to late night radio talk about sex. Some jerk called in and it as obvious that he knew NOTHING about the female genitalia except where he wanted to put his putz. Nothing like some guy trying to "stick it in" cold turkey, to make a woman "frigid".
