Showcases Denzel's limitations (and strengths) as an actor

I say this in acknowledgement of his outstanding talent. But even the great Denzel has his weak points.

First the strengths: Denzel has extreme believability when it comes to the character's bootstraps ideology and discipline. That's always been a Denzel trademark, last seen to good effect in The Great Debaters. So the single best moment is Denzel's flareup of anger at his younger brother's indolence. ("You can wear these big-ass...." Brother: - "Hey!") You can see the ambition and determination in Denzel's eyes, and you just know he's never going to give up. He's going to make it. We know it, Mina knows it.

He also has an excellent final scene over the phone with his Dad. Filial piety is another believable Denzel trait.

But the liabilities loom just as large: Denzel is a cold lover and no amount of charm can change that. He's just aloof, period. I found little screen chemistry between the two leads and this, after all, is supposed to be a romance. Nope. I didn't believe it for a minute.

Too bad. The courtship should have sizzled. It should have been "hot and spicy" as the title promises. But with Denzel playing the romantic lead, this might have just as well been called "Mississippi Iceberg."

Brilliant and thought-provoking reply. I'll be mulling it over for days. Thanks!

I have to agree with the OP about Denzel's performance is incredible.

But on the other hand, I have to disagree with him being lackluster as a romantic.

For one thing, Hollywood (or should I say America) have a problem with seeing a clean-cut, non-stereotypical black man in a romantic lead.

Not saying that the OP has a problem with Denzel playing a romantic lead, but let's be honest, almost all of the films that Denzel had a romantic interest (and had a love scene/romantic scene), including MISSISSIPPI MASALA, were directed by a non-white director. Coincidence?

It's all a matter of personal taste but I agree with your general comments and your tacit complaint. I'm all for black romantic leads. It's just that I find Denzel, as an individual, too aloof for my taste.

I agree with the OP about Denzel being aloof, and the overall lack of chemistry with the leads. The way I can tell whether leads in a movie have chemistry is what my reaction is when they kiss. In this movie, when Denzel/Demetrius was working his way up to that first kiss with Sarita/Mina, I cringed and couldn't keep my eyes on the screen when they finally touched lips. Something about it all was awkward and weird and totally lacking in chemistry. Vs. other movies where the leads have chemistry and I find myself mesmerized and don't look away when they kiss. That's the way I can tell, it's like my "chemistry detection system." I put the blame on Denzel, not Sarita. Some people emanate a lot of natural sexual energy - Denzel just isn't one of those people. He's good looking, intelligent, and he has a lot of charisma and is good in front of a camera, but he doesn't ooze sexual energy the way some other male actors do. (and there's a difference between what the audience projects onto an actor merely because they themselves find the actor good looking and somebody they wish they could hook up with, vs. what the actor himself actually emanates. Bezillions of women would probably attack me for saying Denzel lacks natural sexual energy and comes across as too aloof, because they happen to find him attractive and would love to hook up with him. But just because one finds somebody attractive doesn't mean that person actually has a natural warmth and sexual energy about them.)

I agree with you. I have always thought denzel {and samuel l jackson is another} was of a generation or mindset that is uncomfortable with depicting interracial love on screen.

Another actor who should not be a romantic lead ever is Tom Cruise.

I thought the leads had great chemistry but we all know Denzel usually doesnt play the "romancitc" type so he was playing against cast.

Yeah.
