Needs a proper widescreen anamorphic DVD release

Great movie that needs a proper DVD release. It's only availbale in butchered 4x3 format and deserves an anamorphic widescreen one.

Supposedly Sony is re-releasing in early 06 in widescreen.

Does anybody know what the correct widescreen ratio should be?

Its original aspect ratio is 1.85:1. Matter of fact it HAS BEEN released on anamorphic widescreen but only in R3. Check: http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/17185.html

I ordered it from DVDfromKorea.com for $10.99. They say it was released 20050408.

I've compared the picture area of the R1 4:3 DVD and the R3 16:9 DVD, and the latter is obviously cropped top and bottom, so it doesn't show any more of the picture than the R1 4:3 DVD.

The R3 16:9 didn't show any more original picture detail on the sides than can be seen in the R1 4:3, it just takes the open matte area and crops away the top and bottom.
