Vassilissa? I don't think it was indicated within the film what caused her death. Perhaps she died in childbirth, or from a disease. She seemed to have died young and I gained the impression that Antonio opened the restaurant alone.

What makes you think she died young? I thought Antonio called whatsisname, the lieutenant, because Vasillissa had just recently died and it was hard for him to be alone after so many years together. It broke my heart to see the photo on her gravestone: it was the one he took all those years before, when he thought he was going to leave.
