Why is the movie titled 'The Man in the Moon'?

Then you should re-watch it. Danny is talking to her sister and they talk about when they were little, and they told their problems to 'the man in the moon.'

Yes, I am not really surprised so many people miss this message of the story, though it is subtle.
A true existential movie.
The movie begins and ends with key essential conversations between the sisters on the porch.
