I miss the girl she used to be

I was watching this movie and I swear I got really emotional, Cause I miss the old slutty catholic madonna, before kids, before her terrible english accent, and fake jewishness....I want the old Madonna back.

reply

I totally agree. I love this movie and I loved her during that era. She was awesome! Now, it seems she just wants to sit back and enjoy the wealthy family life. I mean, that's cool and all, but I sure miss her! I also thought it crappy that she charged $250 a seat for her last tour. What was that all about? Like she doesn't have enough money?! I did pay the money and go though. I must admit, I had to see the diva in concert here in Detroit for myself. HBO taped it that night. My charge card took the damage...hehe.

Her "Jewishness" isn't "fake". She studies and follows the Kabbalah, which is a study of the hidden meanings behind the messages of Judaism. It isn't "fake" at all. And she doesn't have a British accent. She just pronounces words more clearly now. She doesn't say "cahn't" instead of "can't" or "wohds" instead of "words". *rolls eyes*

reply

Oh please.
I'm like Madonna- A LOT. But I don't think she's a god or anything. I love it when her rabid fans come to her defense over EVERYTHING.
I hate to tell you.. but that British Accent is FAKE. As far as her "Jewishness" goes... no, I don't think that's fake. I think she truly is a follower of that religion.
And before some calls me an "anti-fan" or something- I've been following Madonna's career since 1985. I enjoy her music and personality even if I don't agree with some of her views.

Dragonlance Chronicles should be made into a movie!! (maybe even a trilogy!)

This is from someone who is only as young as to remember her in the beginning of the stages with the English accent, the Kabbalah (Sorry if spelt wrong). I mean I think it was the song 'Frozen' of her Ray Of Light album that started me being a fan, since then I have liked all her stuff, old and new. Truth or Dare was on More Four a couple of weeks ago and I watched it. I have not seen it all but the ad on the t.v for it was like a map of Madonna going through all that she has not, the county house, guy richie, the kids and all that and sayin that the documentary was all before that. I watched it and was truly surprised to see her like that. I was pretty cool to see how someone can transform over the years and admitting that she was a lot younger then, then she is now. The scenes like in 'Like A Virgin' were pretty graphic for a concert. I did enjoy it and I like the both sides of Madonna and I am sure she has still has it in her, but it is locked up in a box names 1980's.

SmellyCat, I couldn't agree more! I loved the days of "Express Yourself" and "Causin' a Commotion".

The trendy religion-of-the-month, writing children's books (she should just let kids read her first book she made!), gettin' preachy with Oprah phase is tedious. Oh the good old days! They don't grab their crotches like they used to....

In Madonna defense, when you go to England and you are there for a month or two, you come home with an english Accent. If noticed this is particularly true for singers and musicians. It's kinda of weird but it's true and it's happened to me. It's like when you come home from Germany for France and for the first couple of weeks all your "hello's, goodby's & thank you's are in that particular laugage. It's just a matter of how good your ear is a picking it up and trying to fit in with the locals.

reply

As a linguistics professor, I must whole-heartedly disagree with you. An adult (usually anybody over 14) will pick up an accent only if they consciously TRY to imitate it (see: habit), but you will not mysteriously develop an accent and/or dialect that is unbeknownst to you. I've heard this theory from several young people who travel, and it is absolutely false.

To put it simply: Madonna is faking it.

reply

I never said it was uncounsious and it's not so mysterious. It's more playful than anything else. What I don't understand is why is she a faker. Whether I'm in a pub on London's west side or in the south of France in Eze, I tend to sound more like the locals of the place i'm visiting. When I'm in Atlanta, I tend to pick up a little twang. Maybe it's true only of singers and actors. Guess I'm a faker too.

P.S. Streisand does the same thing when she introduced Barry Gibb in the "One Voice" concert.

reply

Not to contradict a professor or anything, but I have a very good friend who moved to the south (Georgia & South Carolina) in 1991. She's going on 15 years of living there. Within the first couple of years, I noticed that she had a little bit of a twang when she spoke certain words. She by no means has a full on southern accent but she doesn't talk like the Philly girl she used to be. And she wasn't the type to just imitate other people either (though, to be honest, I can't swear to that since I never asked her).
I personally don't hear a British accent when Madonna speaks. If Prince Charles or Sting or David Becham speaks, then I hear a British accent. I just think Madonna picked up some of the speaking pattern of the people she's around most often since she moved to England. Maybe I hear things differently than you, but Madonna still sounds American for the most part to me.
Her speaking has been evolving since 1990 when I saw an overseas interview with her & really, really noticed a change in how she spoke. Much more polished, used 'bigger' words, pronounced everything to the hilt. I think she was trying to come across as more educated & decided it was time to project that in public. Maybe now it's an ingrained habit but I don't at all think she's faking it. It just is now.
And everyone is different so even though you're an educator, never assume that NO ONE over the age of 14 could unconciously pick up an accent. There are a lot of people in the world after all.

reply

I agree with the thought of the old Madonna was great. But I like todays Madonna also.I think it's about evolving with her, and not dwelling on the past. But then again I'm only 20, and the earliest I can rememebr of Madonna was during her Blonde Ambition era which was her greatest. But sence then I have grown with her and love all of her differen't reinventions.

reply

My favorite Madonna era was from 1989-1992 and I loved her on the Blond Ambition Tour. Best tour ever! And I do miss the 'old' Madonna & all but people change as they get older. Their opinions can change, their priorities can change, their attitudes can change. That's what happened to Madonna. Once she had Lourdes, her whole outlook changed and she became a mother.
I think she finally found the unconditional love she was looking for and it satisfied something inside of her that she previously satisfied with being sexual, provocative & controversial.
She couldn't roll around on a bed feigning masturbation for the rest of her life, could she?
And so what if she has a fake accent. I myself don't really hear an accent. I think someone else said it earlier that she just prounounces her words fully now. Around the time of Blond Ambition I saw an interview (German TV I think, white pantsuit & her dad pops in too) w/Madonna & it was the first time I noticed that she really cleaned up her speaking habits & was using bigger words & such. So her style of speaking has been undergoing changes for some time now, not just since she has been living in London.
The religion thing, I pay absolutely no attention to. I can't be bothered. I hope it's real & that she's happy with it and all but I don't pay attention to that aspect of her life.
It's funny though........the critics of Madonna go from one end of the spectrum to the other. One set calls her an ugly, old, washed up hag who should retire and the other set thinks she a boring mom who sold out. I think she should be lauded for maintaining a career in a business that few women in today's age can.
She's going to be 49 this year........we just can't have the old Madonna back at this stage in her life. I don't think it would be very interesting. Just sad that a star is trying to recapture the past & I can't see Madonna acting that way very much, other than still doing her old songs when she tours.

Both of them are some what retired, which I hope Madonna does in the next couple of years.

Accents are contagious. You can see people make an effort not to unconsciously 'imitate' someone's accent when they're talking to them.
If someone from the south moves to CA and 'loses' it people comment that they can barely hear an accent so what's the difference?
If you lived in England you'd have to make a serious effort NOT to speak like your husband, kids? and everyone else around you.
Angelina Jolie was fighting a horrible southern accent, from living in New Orleans, in her last interview.
They sound ridiculous but I really think it would happen to anyone.

As far as missing the girl. She's grown up. I'd just like to see someone new step up. Outrageous, funny and pure will are hard to come by.
We know Britney, Paris and Lindsay aren't the next generation.

reply

Well they don't care what people think and do whatever they want, just like Madonna did. I think that if the paparazzi and technology now was around back then. Madonna probably would have been alot more wildely seen. I mean honestly the things that these girls today do, make the things Madonna did then seem like childs play.

Smellycat, Madonna was never slutty shut up. She was cool, sexy, classy, trendy, and PIMPING CUZ LADIES CAN PIMP TOO. SLUT IS such a typical negative female label isn't it. would u call her slutty if she was a man?

plus the like a virgin performance if u look back now was tame. people do much worse on stage now, including actually getting naked and having sex! haha

otherwise i agree with u she was cooler and edgier. but she's 50 now so it's hard to be the same person through near 20 years i guess

I too miss the slutty old madonna. She was definitely slutty, that's what she was going for and she did it well. Madonna has evolved definitely as a result of having kids, etc. That's life, people change so it's not about Madonna going back to what she was. When you are younger, creativity comes through you more naturally. I think the problem with madonna is a lot of the stuff from her in the last 6-7 years has been what she thinks she should do instead of her just letting whatever needs to come out, come out. I though the reinvention tour was perfect for her. It showed an older, more mature madonna who had settled down. I was really happy for her. Then after the divorce it has nothing but the age-defying Madonna with the partying videos and Jesus Luz, kissing girls on stage, etc.

What we really need is a young female artist who is more in control of her creative process, like Madonna was the whole way through her career. Lady Gaga isn't cutting it b/c she's traveling down Madonna's well-worn paths. We need someone new and different who let's their youth and creativity rule them. Gaga is too contrived.

If you miss anything from Madonna past you don't really get what Madonna is about at all. She's not really a nostalgia person...she always looks forward.

reply

Big kmc. She was just as pimpin as any dude if not more pimpin. Part of her legacy was that she could be on the same level as dudes and earn the same respect for expressing her sexuality. Guys could be pimps/players, and so could Madonna. So please shut up. If u call her slutty, can u at least call some dudes slutty too? Jeeze.
