I wondered why he couldn't have both ' worlds'?

Why didn't Dede and Jane realize that a kid, no matter how smart he is, needs to have fun and time to be serious?? That's common sense...:)

But I guess if they'd realized this obvious fact in the beginning, there wouldn't be much of a film! ....LOL...

He could of been extremely smart genuis and have
fun as kids do???

I agree with that!!!

For a good time, and to see smart kids having a good time, watch Real Genius, an early Val Kilmer movie.

hmmm good point. I think eventually thats what happens though...because Jane stays in his life. Even though its not shown, I am pretty sure he still goes to that genius school but at the same time has fun.

Common sense, AND how the film ended.

Did you ever notice that people who believe in creationism look really un-evolved?

They sort of knew it even before the end, just that neither of them weren't very good at balancing it and figuring it out.

The original Odyssey of the Mind trip did include stuff like Disneyworld and the horse riding etc.

And Dede had let Fred do stuff like go to the library, bought the piano and presumably paid for lessons etc.

I did think the two characters were a bit extreme though in their ways.

He did, at the end. Like he said, he made loads of new friends and was happy.

The reason Fred walked out on Jane, was because although he did need to be challenged, she went entirely the wrong way about it. He was screaming for love and affection which is what his Mom always give him. Thats why he left, the poor kid just wanted to see his Mom.
