Madeline Kahn should have played Molly

It would have been funny to see Madeline play a crazy bum.
Also Lesley Ann Warren didn`t do good acting in this movie.

Anyone think Mel Brooks may have offered her the part first?

I agree that Madline Kahn should have played Molly...Lesley Ann Warren was miscast. Her onscreen persona is just a little too sophisticated to be believable as a homeless person.

I've re-thought my last post on this thread and have decided that Teri Garr should have played Molly.

teri would have done well

I worked on "Life Stinks" and Madline Kahn was who Mel Brooks wanted. I believe she had a scheduling conflict. Leslie stepped in.

reply

What did you do on the film?

reply

I was Leslie Ann Warren's stand-in and body double.

reply

What are Mel and Lesley Ann like? Did you get to talk to them at all?

reply

Every day we filmed. I worked on the project from beginning to end. I missed only one week of pick-up shots filmed at a later date. Mel had a lot of energy and Leslie was quiet and sweet.

He loves Madeline Kahn. She just couldn't do the roll at the time.

reply

Wow, you worked with the great Mel Brooks on this? I'd love to have done that. The guy is a *beep* genius and should make more films.

reply

By the way, what the hell is a stand-in? What exactly did you do-can you be specific on this? You have plenty of room to write.

reply

Hi Steve, A stand-in watches the as the actors and directors set up a scene... when they are through the actors go to wardrobe/makeup/craftservice/etc. We as stand-ins then stand/walk through the scene as the camera and lighting are set up. This could be minutes to hours long depending on the set up. After this is completed the actors come back in and "film" the scene.

He might have but I know Madeline wanted to move on and do other projects after awhile. She was also offered the role of Vilma Kaplan in Silent Movie but didn't want to play that sort of role again so Mel got Bernadette Peters to do it and I think it worked. Personally, anybody who turns Mel Brooks down should be committed to a mental home.

i like all three: lesley ann warren, madeline kahn and (somebody mentioned) teri garr.

warren may've been too pretty and elegant to be believable as a bag lady (though, she would be more convincing as a dancer - which she actually was - than either kahn or garr).
but hey, if you were a gazillionaire trying to survive in a dangerous l.a. slum for 30 days because of a bet, and you did, and you found a queen to take back to your empire when it was all said and done, you couldn't do much better than taking a lesley ann warren home...
but, we usually don't think of her when it comes to slapstick comedy, and the like (and i do think she pulls it off in "life stinks").

generally, though, i agree that kahn would've been the best of these great choices: i can't even think of "high anxiety," "young frankenstein," or "slapstick," without laughing out loud thinking about her at certain moments in movies like those. and, i personally always associate her with mel brooks and his films; even though, she wasn't in many of them. she wasn't a stageworthy beauty like warren, but she had a flair that makes me wonder what she would've done with the "molly" role. guess that's why she was brooks' first choice.

i also think garr would've been good at the time. she didn't have the beauty of a warren, or the comedic style of a kahn, but she would've made a great "molly."

and, i don't think brooks is out of his depth starring in this movie. he starred in some of his other films, and was always believable and funny. he was a comedian, after all.

Madeline would have been perfect, and Teri Garr would have been very good, but Lesley Ann Warren did an excellent job in my book. But I do think her character was a bit too glam. They should have used more "gritty" makeup.

Wasn't Kahn dead? Oh no. She didn't die until 99.
But I bet she was tired

reply

damn, Madeline Kahn should have played almost everything
the woman was crazy talented
