watching films in school,no books?

I must be an old geezer (48)because I am amazed by the people commenting on this film saying they were "forced" to watch it at school as part of their English course.

I love film but I hope most of the English course still involves the written word in various forms?.

I wonder what films are used in schools and how are they used?
