The movie is loosely based on the classic tale "East of the Sun, West of the Moon". there are many different versions of this tale each that I have read has different aspects to it - some of which are in the movie. The big part that the movie is missing is that the princess had to use the winds to help her find her prince. They couldn't really do that with this movies less then stellar special effects. Its a great story though. You could find it from google of any good fairy tale compilation (one with different cultures in it, not just a brother's grimm one) There is also a novel based on this tale called East by Edith Pattou.

I just found this movie on Amazon.com a week or so ago and had to order it. I rented this movie from my local video store about 5000 times when I was little. Hmm...

Really? I thought this was based off of the myth of Cupid and Psyche.

Most of what we consider "modern" fairytales are based upon Cupid and Psyche. I'm planning on doing my dissertation to trace and prove that evolution. This story is just an example of the set of stories that are closer to the original than "Cinderella" (which has French origins, of course) and "Rupunzel". But all stories where a prince is under a transformation curse ("Beauty and the Beast", "Snow White and Rose Red") and where the princess is put under a sleeping spell ("Snow White" (not the same) and "Sleeping Beauty"), can all be traced back to Cupid and Psyche.

It wasn't the lycans. It was you.

Both "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" and "Beauty and the Beast" stay very close to the Cupid and Psyche story. It's what they call a universal Trope- even cultures that had no direct contact with the greco-Roman culture Had their versions.

My favorite (Other than EotSWotM) is one from the Pacific North West in North America, that also incorporates the Cinderella Trope. The very ending of that one isn't as nice, though- She never is able to return to her love, nor he to her, and so now the wind always blows the smoke towards the most beautiful as he (a wind spirit) searches for her again for all eternity. Still a good ending, just not happy. And they had a lifetime together first, had kids, before she was forever lost.

Actually, the movie combines elements from that tale you mention and also from another popular norweigan fair tale called White-Bear-King-Valemon:
